Introducing ACS Applied Nano Materials

G

iven the successful introduction of ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces 10 years ago, we are now excited to introduce this first issue of ACS Applied Nano Materials, one of two new journals that are being launched this year within the ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces family. Materials science is one of the fastest growing areas of research globally, with research focusing on the synthesis, structure, characterization, and applications of new nanomaterials at the forefront. Understanding fundamental structure−property relationships in detail leads to advanced new materials with applications that impact society through improvements in devices, healthcare, and more traditional applications that enhance the modern lifestyle. Many of the advances in materials science have been driven by breakthroughs in nanoscience and nanotechnology, which are, in turn, driven by the need for smaller tools and devices that solve problems and perform essential and exceptional functions. Given these considerations and the continuing growth in materials research, especially in the field of applications-focused research in nanostructured materials, there is a clear need for new topical journals in the field that can serve authors and readers with improved access to current, state-of-the-art research in the field of applied nanomaterials. It is our intention that ACS Applied Nano Materials will address this need. We are further pleased to introduce the editorial team for ACS Applied Nano Materials. Prof. T. Randall Lee will serve as the Deputy Editor of the new journal, while Prof. Yanli Zhao from Nanyang Technological University, Prof. Limin Qi from Peking University, and Prof. Eunkyoung Kim from Yonsei University will serve as the inaugural Associate Editors (Figure 1). Working

Sample materials include inorganic, organic, and hybrid nanomaterials, quantum dots, metallic and semiconducting nanoparticles, nanowires and nanotubes, self-assembled nanostructures, 1- and 2-D materials, nano carbon, graphene, and related materials. Sample application topics that span the journal’s scope are catalysis, photocatalysis, sensors, plasmonics, photonics, biology, nanomedicine, theranostics, energy conversion and storage, nanopatterning, and nanotechnology. The journal also considers papers that describe novel approaches to synthesis of new and existing nanomaterials that have important applications.” ACS Applied Nano Materials will publish regular Articles, Letters, Comments, and specific invited content. While there are many definitions of “nanomaterials”, the journal will consider papers that describe materials in which the pivotal structural features are 500 nm and smaller. This parameter is largely straightforward for nanoparticles, nanowires, nanotubes, nanocoatings, and organic thin films but less so for porous solids and membranes. From our perspective, if the dimension critical to the targeted application (e.g., pore size) is 500 nm or less, then the material will be considered appropriate for the journal. The concept of “applications” is also critical for the journal. While demonstration of the targeted application is strongly preferred, we will also consider manuscripts in which the innovation lies in the synthesis, characterization, or performance/properties of the nanomaterials. In the latter case, the manuscript must highlight potential applications (preferably in the Title, Abstract, Introduction, and Conclusions) and provide a description of the potential impact of the work on applications while placing the work in context with regard to state-of-the-art performance in the field. As a final note, the ultimate goal of ACS Applied Nano Materials is to publish scientific reports of high significance that teach researchers specifically and the public in general how to solve emerging problems within the realm of applications. To achieve this goal, we will embrace the highest possible standards with regard to peer review and publication so that ACS Applied Nano Materials becomes the “go-to” journal in the field.

together, the editors of ACS Applied Nano Materials will seek to provide authors with professional review and rapid turnaround times from submission to publication. Papers published in the journal will also receive high-quality support from ACS publications, particularly with regard to technical editing and article layout. We invite prospective authors to read the journal instructions to authors, which includes the journal scope: “ACS Applied Nano Materials is an interdisciplinary journal publishing original research covering all aspects of engineering, chemistry, physics, and biology relevant to applications of nanomaterials.
