Introducing JCED’s Latin America Special Issue

he Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data (JCED) is delighted to feature contributions from researchers in Latin America in this special issue. It comprises more than 30 articles, the authors of which are located in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Topics range from thermophysical property measurements to a multitude of phase equilibrium measurements and phase equilibria modeling and simulation. Systems range from conventional organics, to fats and fatty acids important to food products and bioenergy production, to ionic liquids. It is clear from this special issue that there is a vibrant and growing community of high-quality thermodynamics researchers in the Latin America region. JCED celebrates this important part of our community and highlights Latin American research in this special issue. The successful Equifase conference series (Iberoamerican Conference on Phase Equilibria and Fluid Properties for Process Design) brings together many of these researchers on a regular basis, along with colleagues in the Iberian peninsula, and was last held in Córdoba, Argentina in 2018. The International Conference on Properties and Phase Equilibria for Product and Process Design (PPEPPD) was jointly hosted by Argentina and Brazil at Iguazu Falls in Latin America for the first time in 2013. Finally, the Journal of Chemical& Engineering Data wishes to congratulate Professor Esteban A. Brignole, Professor Emeritus at Planta Piloto de Ingenieria Quimica (PLAPIQUI) at Universidad Nacional del Sur in Argentina, on his recent election to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He is the first researcher in Argentina to be elected to the NAE. Brignole is widely recognized as the father of chemical engineering research in Argentina. While his knowledge and interests span many fields of chemical engineering, his primary expertise is in the thermodynamics of processes, which perfectly matches the scope of JCED. We are delighted that there are several contributions in this issue from researchers associated with PLAPIQUI and whose work has been influenced directly by Professor Brignole. Thus, it is exceedingly fitting that the publication of this special issue featuring thermodynamics researchers in Latin America coincides with Professor Brignole’s election to the NAE.
