Engineering and Process ACETYLENE BY WULFF. Large, small, and medium &XcomI panies have heen our collaborators in I&EC’s M-industry collaborative report series. Techniques of working with each can be as different as their siw. Aast. Editor Gordon Bider wrote his first article in this series earlier this year with one of the larger chemical companies. While hia relations with the actual oollaborating authors were on an informal enough basis, those with management at times became more legalistic, as various approvals and clearances were obtained from august v.p.’s and the like. WulffProcess Co. ranks among the smallest (in physical size, that is) with which we have dealt. Piotocol was d l y satisfied-those who supplied the information were also the ones who made final decisions on what could and what could not be said. Under such conditions, Gordon says it is sure easy to have a meeting of minds. Our editors get to know some interesting personalities when they prepare these articles. Take C. J. Coberly, mainspring behind Wulff Process and one of Bixler’s “silent” collaborators (actual collaborator C. J.’s nephew, C. W. Coberly). C. J. organized Kobe, Inc., a number of years ago, and built up a sizable company in oil field machinery. Mr. Coberly sold his interest in Kobe several y e m ago to Dresser Iudustries and ‘‘retired’’-retired to give his full attention to developing new products for Kobe and to commercializing the WuH process for acetylene, a proceas in which he bas had an interest from the earliest days, aa you will see when you turn to the article. Whether you are a disciple of the WuH, Sachse, Schoch, or other process of making acetylene from hydrocarbons, we are sure you will find it worth while.

PANEL ON PILOT PLANTS.

The summing

up of the pilot plant articles presented in August, September, and October i s short but sweet.

Readers’ comments were

solicited for incorporation into this panel; their quality was good, their quantity disappointing.

Special

thanks goes to Leo Blotz of Standard Oil Development for his yeoman work in handling the ”rewrite” and organization of a11 these symposium articles.
