k- k- k- The fortieth recipient of the Perkin Medal is Francis Conles Frary, director of research of the Aluminum Compaiiy of Xmerica. I n 1556 William Henry Perkin discovered Perkin’s purple or mauve and thereby initiated the synthesis of dyestuffs. This, in turn, became the foundation of the vastly important synthetic organic chcmical industry, beginning the iit, ilization of coal tar. Sir William yas also the first to synthc,4ae the perfume coumarin, and he act’ually engaged in the manufacture of dyestuffs until 1874. He had many friends and admirors in tlie United States, and it i.: customary for those who w r e prescnt when the first Perkin Medal vas awarded to him in 1906 to byear the same or a replica of the mauve tie which made it? appearance on that occasion. The presentation for 1946 was made after x dinner givcn a t the Hotel Commodore, Nciv York, January 11. The chairman of the A-inierican Section of tlie Society of Chemical Indu Francis J. Curtis, who is vice president of Afonsanto Chemical Company, pre3ided. James G. Vail, vice president, and dircctor of reitarch of Philadelphia Quartz Company, spoke on the pcrwna1 side of the medalist, and Webster S.Jones, director of the Coilege of Engineering, Carnegie Institute of Technology, discussed his scientific achievements. Marston T. Rogert,, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry of Columbia University, presented the medal, as has been the custom since 1930when he graciously made the award to Herbert H. Dow, a t that time preyident of t,hc Dow Chemical Company. Aftcr accepting the medal, Francis Frary described some of the complexities of inorganic chemistry mct in the manufacture of various types of alumina. AIarston Bogert Ivore the celebrated mauve tie; and one other “n’earer of the purple” was present or1 this occasion-August Mer2 of Calco Chemical Company. The Perkin blcdal v a s founded in 1906 in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the coal-tar color industry. The a m r d may be made t o any chemist residing in the Griitcd States of America for work which he has done a t any time during his career, whether this work proved successful a t the time of execution or publication, or whether it became valuable in subsequent dcvelopment of the industry. The incdalist, is chosen by a committee representing the Society of Chemical Industry, the AMERICANCHEMICAL SOCIETY, the Electrochemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Societe de Chimic Industrielle.
