Basic Concepts in Organic Chemistry: A Programmed Learning Approach PeterSimpson. Chapman & Hall: New York, NY. 1994. viii + 124 pp. 20.1 x 24.6 cm.

This volume contains seven linear teaching programs in areas of basic organic chemistry. The concepts treated in the suite of programs are fundamental to any introductory course in organic chemistry and include certain intellectual techniques, such as '"curly arrows," which students often find difficult. The programs of self-contained exercises are built up from frames. Each frame tells something about a concept and usually includes a question to help readers find out whether or not they have understood the point. The correct solution is given in the next frame so that students can cheek a t once whether they have grasped the paint or go back over it again.

It presents important principles in a concise manner that will enable the nonspecialist to read and comprehend crystallographic literature. Explanations are concise, and mathematical prerequisites have been kept to a minimum. In the first four chapters, the author presents the vocabulary of crystallography, with discussions of lattice points, unit cells, symmetry, point groups, crystal systems, space g r o u p and equivalent oositinns. The mincioles of X-rav diffraction and methods of deter-
