t is our pleasure to introduce an invited contribution from the laboratories of Professor Brian M. Stoltz of the California Institute of Technology featuring their work on PalladiumCatalyzed Asymmetric Conjugate Additions. Construction of quarternary stereocenters continues to be a challenging synthetic problem in organic synthesis. The Stoltz group has developed an elegant approach by addition of arylboronic acids to unsaturated substrates under palladium catalysis with a common PyOx ligand under operationally simple conditions. Mechanistic studies highlighted the need for water in the reaction, and the substrate scope for the reaction is also presented. This synthetic method provides an attractive option for the stereoselective preparation of 3-arylketones and could be of use for future industrial applications. We thank Professor Stoltz for his contribution to OPR&D.
