Iodine is a moderately strong oxidizing agent and therefore reacts vigorously with many reducing agents. With acetylene, the reaction can be explosive; similarly with acetaldehyde. Iodine reacts vigorously with sulfur and with most powdered metals. With aqueous or gaseous ammonia, iodine forms nitrogen triiodide⭈ammonia, NI3⭈NH3, an extraordinarily shock-sensitive, explosive compound. Typical symptoms of acute exposures:

On the skin, inflammation, staining. In the eyes, inflammation, pain, blurred vision. If inhaled, sore throat, coughing, labored breathing, lung edema. If ingested, sore throat, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting. Principal target organ(s) or system(s):

Skin, eyes, respiratory tract.

Storage Requirements Store with other poisons separated from reducing agents in a cool, dry, well-ventilated, locked location.

Additional Remarks At ordinary temperatures, the vapor pressure of iodine is approximately 260 ppm and therefore greatly exceeds the limits established by OSHA and ACGIH. Accordingly, users will be likely to be over-exposed to the vapors of this element unless appropriate precautions are rigidly maintained; see the MSDS for details. Symptoms of lung edema are not manifest immediately in victims who have inhaled iodine vapor; some hours may elapse first; physical effort can exaggerate these symptoms. Rest is essential for persons exposed to excess vapor.
