ION ACTIVITIES IN HOMOGENEOUS CATALYSIS. THE FORMATION OF PARACHLORO-ACETANILIDE FROM

ACETYLCHLORO-AMINO-BENZENE BY

HERBERT s HARNED.4ND HARRYSELTZ‘ Received April LO, 1922

Introduction The catalytic effect of specific ions on the velocities of certain reactions, in liquid system5, has been the subject of much investigation. The velocity of hydrolysis of esters and the inversion of sucrose are accelerated by the presence of either the hydrogen or the hydroxyl ion. Benzaldehyde is converixd to benzoin by the catalytic influence of the cyanide ion. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen upon the introduction of the iodine ion. Acetyl-chloro-amino-benzene is converted to p-chloroacetanilide by the simultaneous presence of the hydrogen and chlorine ion
