knows that, when embarking upon a new research project, the most egregious of errors is failure to per form a painstaking study of prior literature relating to his subject. Yet, in the academic world it is not unheard of to be "scooped" for publication or thesis purposes be fore a project is completed, even though a thorough search has been made and current publications have been kept up with. This has often happened because of ignorance of research projects on same or similar subjects that might have been initi ated (perhaps even in diverse fields of science or for different ultimate objectives) before or even after one's own work commenced. There is probably no way to eliminate such occurrences, but one device that has recently come to our atten tion, and that might help minimize risks, is the Science Information Exchange service, which is now available to the general public. A N Y SCIENTIFIC RESEAECHER

Under aegis of a branch of the Federal government that represents the ultimate in integrity and sense of purpose, the Smithsonian Insti tution, the SIE has gathered in its almost inexhaustible grasp sum maries of research work that is cur rently supported by Federal Gov ernment agencies and a host of other fund-granting institutions. This repository of knowledge was formerly available only to Federal users. The origins of the program go back to 1949, with the joining of several government agencies in establishment of the Medical Sci ences Information Exchange. After a rather prolonged gestation period in which the Exchange came under administration of the Smithsonian, biological, physical, agricultural, and social sciences were added and the Science Information Exchange emerged. Offices of the Exchange are now at 1730 M Street, N.W., in Washington.
