and T e l e g r a p h dedicated its new Clifton, N . J., laboratory for standard ization of dimensional a n d electrical measuring instruments. Although the L*b was built for checking IT&T equip ment, it will handle, on a fee basis, standardization work for outside organ izations. T h e l a b is equipped to provide standard testing of gage blocks, threaded ring gages, and many other mechanical measurements. Of more interest t o chemists a n d chemical engi neers, however, are its services for pre cise m e a s u r e m e n t s of voltage, current, resistance, frequency, and other basic electrical units. It uses standards certified by National Bureau of Stand ards. Allen V. Astin, director of NBS, pointed out at the dedication cere-

Soluble Tungsten Soluble source of tungsten for use as a furnace additive has successfully completed field tests, according to Electro Metallurgical Co., a division of Union Carbide. Known as self-reduc ing tungsten, it is said to dissolve rapidly and distribute uniformly in a steel melt. The alloy contains tungstic oxide and a reducing agent, yields tungsten directly to melts of tool, die, or other alloy steels, Electromet says. T h e com pany is now marketing two g r a d e s low molybdenum which contains a maximum of 0.69£ moly and high molybdenum which has in it 2 to 3?r moly. It is a desirable source of t u n g sten for steels containing from 0.60 to 18% W, according to t h e company. * E2

Standards yield about 50,000 to 100,000 counts per minute above 2 0 k.e.v with activity less than 0.1 microcurie. E7 • Spar Engineering & Development has developed a P r o g r a m m e r Counter which is used to turn on a n d off test ap paratus whose limits are sensed by strain gages, thermocouples, or other transducers with o u t p u t of less than 100 millivolts d.c.
