It will be preceded by the 21st Conference of the International Union of P u r e and Applied Chemistry, also to be held a t Montreal. I n addition to a broad program of contributed papers, the Congress will include five plenary lectures and ap proximately sixty invited sectional lec tures. T h e main divisions of the Con gress program are as follows: Physical Chemistry, Applied Chem istry, Analytical Chemistry, and Or ganic Chemistry Symposium. W i t h the exception of the Organic Chemistry Symposium, which will con sist of invited papers only, each of these divisions will comprise several sections meeting concurrently. There will be .3 sections on analytical chemistry. Section 1, the analysis of metals and minerals, will feature two papers: Dr. V. A. Fassel, Ames, Iowa. Re cent Advances in the Spectroscopic De termination of Trace Elements in Minerals and Metals. Dr. H. A. Sloman, Teddington, Eng land. The Determination of Gases in Metals. Section 2 will deal with the analytical chemistry of the less common metals. Speakers and their topic? a r e : Prof. M. Bobtelsky, Jerusalem, Israel. (July, 1960, page 44 A, Sept. I960, page 82 A ) . The program for the X X I s t Conference of I U P A C is not yet complete. Meetings, however, will all be held at the Social Centre, University of M o n t real. Tentatively scheduled is a meeting of the analytical chemistry section. Full details of the program to date including registration forms, data on technical installations visits, travel, hotels, ladies program, and entertainment, appear in the second circular. This is available from the National Research Council, Ottawa 2, Canada. T h e third and final circular will a p p e a r in March.

Electron Microscope Society Meets T h e 19th Annual Meeting of the Electron Microscope Society of America will be held August 23 to 26 in the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel at Pittsburgh, Pa. In addition to the general sessions of contributed papers, it is planned to again hold a special session of short papers on interesting, useful, and Tinusual electron microscopic techniques. Three special symposia are also being planned. Abstracts (limit—150 words) of all contributed papers for presentation at the technical sessions may be submitted to the Program Chairman, Dr. A. R. Taylor, Research Division, Parke, Davis and Co., Detroit 32, Mich., before M a y 1, 1961. Information concerning the program may be obtained from the Program Chairman. Information concerning the extensive Scientific and Commercial Exhibits m a y be obtained from D r . Robert V. Rice, E M S A Local Arrangements Chairman, Chemical Physics D e -

partinent, Mellon Institute, 4400 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh 13, Pa. The 20th annual meeting will be held August 29 to Sept. 5, 1962 at the University of Pennsylvania. This will coincide with the Fifth International Congress on Electron Microscopy. Details arc available from the Fifth International Congress for Electron Microscopy, 7701 Burholme Ave., Philadelphia 11, Pa. Officers to serve the Society in 1961 are: Dr. 1). M. Your Analytical Problem is

DIFFERENT! maker of the broadest line of spectrochemical instruments . . . can meet your special requirements. Matching the instrument with the problem is a Baird-Atomic specialty. For over 25 years, B / A has led the field with the most complete line of emission and infrared analytical instruments . . . has had more experience with different problems than any other manufacturer. Here are a few of the significant "firsts" established along the way: • FIRST high resolution large grating Spectrograph introduced in 1935. • FIRST Direct Reading Spectrometer introduced in 1946. • FIRST Double-Beam Infrared Spectrophotometer introduced in 1947.

Electroanalytical Abstracts The Jmnnal of Electroamilytical Chemistry has initiated a new section which contains abstracts on fundamental electrochemical and analytical applications. Included are electrophoresis and paper electrophoresis. The abstracts will be incorporated with the .Tournai or may be obtained separately, liâtes for the abstracts are $4.00 and may be ordered from Elsevier Publishing Co., 110-112, Spuistraat, Amsterdam-C, The Netherlands.

• FIRST Direct Reader to operate without laboratory control — the SPECTROMET — featuring the exclusive Automatic Optical Servo Monitor — introduced in 1955.

B/A's

SPECTROCHEMICAL

Direct Reading Spectrometers — for fast analysis . . . Chemical composition obtained in seconds — for melting control or for large volumes of samples. Available in two models:

Detroit Anachem Conference Scheduled The Ninth Detroit Anachem Conference, sponsored by the Association of Analytical Chemists, Detroit, Mich., will be held again in McGregor Memorial Conference Center at Wavne

INCLUDES:

Spectromet — Requires no laboratory, can be installed close to melt shop. Special rugged compact construction. Automatic Optical Servo Monitor automatically compensates for movement of spectrum lines due to changes in temperature, atmospheric pressure, shock and vibration. Direct Reader — Versatile model for analyses of many materials — aluminum, magnesium, cast iron, stainless steel, etc. 3-Meter Spectrographs Laboratory — The versatile 3-meter concave grating spectrograph for best trace element sensitivity; highest resolution and dispersion; sharp, clear uniform spectrum lines throughout the spectrum. A modern, convenient-to-use spectrograph for both routine analysis and research investigation.

Chemical Microscopy Course at Cornell A three-week course in Chemical Microscopy will be given at, Cornell University, beginning July 10, 1961. It will include measurements and particlesize determination, quantitative analyses, study of crystals and polymeric materials with the polarizing microscope, physical chemistry of crystallization, optics and photomicrography, and an introduction to qualitative analysis. Enrollment is limited, and should be firm by June 15. Correspondence should be addressed to C. W. Mason, School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, Cornell Universitv, Ithaca, X. Y.

LINE

Research Direct Reading Spectrograph

B/A also manufactures the versatile Spectrosource to provide various excitation conditions, the Densitometer-Comparator for measuring spectrum line intensities, and a complete line of accessories. Research Direct Reading Spectrograph — Combines the versatility of the spectrograph with the speed and precision of a direct reading spectrometer. Permits either photographic or photoelectric measurement. Interchangeable DR heads and a unique electronic slit setting device permit a wide range of direct-reading investigation.

~~ Infrared Spectrophotometer

Write for literature describing B/A's spectrochemical line — or better still, tell us about your analytical problem.

Infrared Spectrophotometers — New Models NK-1 and NK-1A feature the proven B/A optical system — large prism, globar source, sealed bolometer detector. These instruments offer maximum prism resolution and signal-tonoise ratio . . . with the fastest scan speed. Broad line of accessories available.
