NONIONIC SURFACE-ACTIVE AGENTS SURFONIC LR-30 and LR-74 are new nonionic surfactants offered by Jefferson. In familiar terminology, they are ethylene oxide adducts of straight chain alcohols. Genetically, they may be described as n-alkoxy-polyethoxyethanols. Their straight chain structure and preliminary testing indicate they have a high degree of biodegradability. These LR products and other adducts are being developed at Jefferson to satisfy the need for effective, physically stable, biologically soft nonionic surfactants. These LR adducts are 100% active and are useful as emulsifiers, wetting agents, detergents, penetrants, solubilizing agents, and dispersants. Of practical interest to the user, the optimum surfactant properties of LR-74 occur in a generally accepted cloud point range of 61°-67°C. SURFONIC LR-30 is slightly alkaline and will provide lowcolored sulfates by either the chlorosulfonic acid or sulfur trioxide route. The numbers in this series represent a tenfold multiple of the molar ratio of ethylene oxide in the product; thus,

SURFONIC LR-30 contains an average of 3 mols of ethylene oxide per mol of alcohol hydrophobe.

SELECTED PROPERTIES Solubility—SURFONIC LR-74 . . . water soluble. LR-30 . . . oil soluble. Compatibility—Completely compatible, not only with other nonionic surface-active agents, but also with anionic and cationic products. Stability—Stable over a wide range of temperature and in the presence of acids and bases . . . spray drying may be accomplished without difficulty. Emulsification—Favorable results have been obtained in kerosene-water and xylene-water systems. Detergency—Terg-O-Tometer shows superiority for the LR products over non-biodegradable counterparts.
