ZEMANY, all of General Electric LLesearch Laboratory, Schenectady. Open ing the way to an important new field, material in this book will per mit relatively rapid, non-destructive chemical analyses which in many cases would be prohibitively expensive, if not impossible, by other means. The book offers authoritative coverage of theory, his tory, necessary equipment, and techniques of x-ray spectrochemical analysis, and describes a wide variety of important applications. SOME IMPORTANT FEATURES: Covers both x-ray absorptiometric and x-ray emission methods · Presents a thorough treatment of the use of polychromatic and monochromatic x-ray beams in quan titative analysis, through absorption methods · Assesses reliability and sensitivitv of various methods as applied to such problems as de termination of traces, high-temperature alloys, and film thicknesses · Clarifies terminology by pruning away excess nomenclature · Gives valuable lists of references for all subjects covered. 1960 357 pages $13.50 Greenstein-Winitz:

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

The Metropolitan Microchemical So ciety has announced a change in the location at which its International Sym posium on Microchemical Techniques will be held. Originally scheduled to take place at Princeton, N. J., the sixday meeting will now be held at The Pennsylvania State University. The meeting dates, Aug. 13 to IS, 1961, re main unchanged. Deadline for the submission of ab stracts of papers to be given at the meeting has been set at Jan. 15, while the final paper should be submitted by May 1. The society members have been requested to submit suggestions concerning additional speakers and papers for possible inclusion in the program. Such suggestions should be sent to Howard Francis, Jr., Pennsalt Chemicals Corp., P.O. Box 4388, Philadelphia 18, Pa. Mr. Francis, who is the society's chairman, has also announced that the society's first meeting of the year will be held at the offices and laboratory of Dr. C. A. Brinkmann at Great Neck, Ν. Υ., Oct. 21.

Gulf Coast Group Meets In October The fall meeting of the Gulf Coast Spectroscopic Group will be held on Oct. 14 at the Fontainebleau Motor Hotel in New Orleans, La. Tentatively, it is expected that the program will con sist of papers on gas chromatography, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and some miscel laneous topics . Howard Cogswell, secretary-treasurer of the group, says that there is no limi tation on attendance or participation in the meeting, except an active interest in the activities of the group.

ISA Offers Chromatography Symposium The 3rd International Symposium on Gas Chromatography, sponsored by the Instrument Society of America, will be held at the Kellogg Center for Con tinuing Education, Michigan State Uni versity, June 13 to 16. Invited papers are planned by workers from Europe as well as the American Continent, and contributions will also be accepted on an unsolicited basis. Special sessions are planned for plant stream analysis, flavor and odor anal ysis, and applications of gas chroma tography to biological systems. Papers are also invited on original advances in column, detector, and readout sys-
