Johns Hopkins Research Conferences in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
T
H E Biology, Chemistry, a n d Physics Departments of T h e J o h n s Hopkins University a r e holding a research conference, a t Gibson Island near Baltimore, under t h e general direction of Neil E . Gordon, J u n e 22 t o J u l y 24. The plan is flexible. T h e d a y begins with a more or less formal lecture, outlining some field of research a n d directing attention to i t s unsolved problems. This is followed b y a discussion in which each one present takes part, making what contribution he can t o t h e solution of t h e problems p r e sented. T h e ideal is t o h a v e a group large enough for all points of view t o be represented, y e t small enough for all who wish t o t a k e active p a r t . Becognized leaders in each field of research a r e to give t h e lectures a n d s t a r t the discussions, b u t success depends o n having a number who a r e capable of contributing ideas. T h e remainder of t h e day is left to sports or conversations. These conferences are intended t o combine mental stimulation, pleasant personal contacts, a n d healthful recreation. T h e Gibson Island Club generously shares its facilities with scientists for this period. T h e club has an excellent golf course, fine tennis courts, splendid swimming a n d beaches, with ample dressing rooms a n d commodious club house. There is excellent fishing in t h e surrounding Chesapeake. Attendants on the conferences may secure rooms in t he club house o r in adjacent cottages o r m a y come from Baltimore for t h e d a y . Meals for all a r e served a t t h e club house. T h e conferences a r e for five weeks on several fields of scientific research. T h e program given below is t o be regarded as a tentative outline t o be filled in o r modified as may seem best. A.

H E Massachusetts Institute of TechT nology h a s recently announced a special summer program on Applied Physics which will feature a Conference on Spectroscopy a n d I t s Application, t o b e held July 20, 2 1 , and 22, and a Conference on Color t o b e held July 2 3 , 24, a n d 2 5 . These two conferences have been planned as a unit, since the two subjects are closely related. During t h e first three days of the week, morning a n d afternoon sessions will b e held, with discussions b y qualified experts on spectroscopic analysis of materials, and on other applications of spectroscopy t o biology, medicine, chemistry, metallurgy, mineralogy, and t o industrial and engineering problems. During t h e Color Conference, morning a n d afternoon meetings will be held, with discussions by eminent authorities on t h e subject of color and its various applications. This conference will b e devoted t o spectrophotometry, colorimetry, a n d t h e applications of color measurements t o industrial problems. Detailed consideration will b e given t o t h e behavior and control of t h e color of dyes and pigments, and their application in such fields a s t h e paint, ink, paper, textile, a n d ceramics industries. These conferences come a t the conclusion of t h e courses on spectroscopic analysis of materials, which are being offered by t h e institute during t h e six weeks from June 16 t o July 24. These deal principally with applications of spectroscopy t o biology, chemistry, geology, metallurgy, physics, and other branches of science. There is n o charge for attendance a t the meetings of t h e conferences, copies of t h e detailed programs of which will be sent on request t o anyone interested. T h e o b ject of t h e conferences is t o promote cooperation between investigators in different fields who have found or m a y find useful t h e technical methods of spectroscopy and color. Information about t h e summer work in Applied Physics m a y b e o b tained from, and request for t h e programs of t h e conferences should be addressed to, Professor G . R . Harrison, Department of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.
