VIM (Voice Input Module), for use with Apple computers, is a state-of-the-art alternative to keyboard input. Data input is direct, immediate, and accurate when done by voice, while hands remain free and procedures are uninterrupted. VIM achieves 98% recognition accuracy, while effectively screening out extraneous sounds. The system comes with voice utility software to initially imprint the user's voice and input desired vocabulary. MCE Inc. 403

Solid-Sampling AA Direct determination of trace metals in solids is possible with a new Zeeman AA. Solid samples of all kinds can be analyzed directly for toxic and other es sential elements. A large tube furnace permits the introduction of samples supported on a small graphite boat. Zeeman lamps correct for the high background when samples are atom ized. Cadmium concentrations from 0.1 ppb to 10 000 ppm can be ana lyzed. Angstrom, Inc. 420

Scanning Potentiostat Model 362 Scanning Potentiostat con tains both a ± 1 A, ± 30-V potentiostat/galvanostat, and a waveform gen erator. It permits either linear sweep or cyclic voltammetry at a scan rate from 0.1 mV/s to 5 V/s. Cyclic scans can be set for either single cycle or repetitive waveforms. The same variety of excita tion waveforms can be applied in the controlled current mode. EG&G Prince ton Applied Research 421

Pulsed C 0 2 Laser PRF-150G, a high rep rate UV preionized pulsed C 0 2 laser, is designed for general use and OEM applications. It of fers arc-free plasma at repetition rates up to 150 Hz. The maximum pulse en ergy is 500 mj/pulse up to 50 Hz, 300 mJ/pulse up to 150 Hz. The pulse length is 100 ns or longer, dependent

Chemicals Ion Exchange Gels DEAE-Sepharose Fast Flow and CMSepharose Fast Flow give improve ments in processing speed and through put to large-scale users. The gels are derived from the DEAE- and CM-Sepharose CL-6B gels by a modification of the cross-linking that results in im proved mechanical strength. Flow rates 3 - 5 times those of the CL-6B are ob served. Pharmacia Fine Chemicals 425

HPLC/Spectro-Grade Solvents Solvents are distilled in glass and fil tered through 0.2 μ η Teflon TFE mem branes. Label information includes for mula, formula weight, safety data, flash point, first-aid procedures, UV absorbance data, GC assay, evaporation resi due, and water content.
