Justifiable biocide When bacteria, fungi, marine and terrestrial organisms harm people or property, they deserve to be killed. We can supply you with a weapon these creatures consider pretty ghastly. The weapon is a new class of triorganotin compounds that include bis(tri-n-butyltin) oxide, bis(tri-n-propyltin) oxide, and triphenyltins. bis(tri-n-butyltin) oxide. The first of these, bis(tri-n-butyltin) oxide, sold under the trade name bioMeT* TBTO* is now in use as a slime control agent for industrial cooling water and for closed systems in pulp and paper mills. Trademark TBTO is the active ingredient in wood preservatives and marine antifouling paints. It keeps textiles pure and prevents odors in plastics. Hospitals use TBTO for environmental control especially to combat highly infectious bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus.

In the petroleum industry, bioMeT TBTO is controlling sulfate reducing bacteria in secondary oil recovery water. Here neither TBTO nor quater-

nary ammonium compounds by themselves are completely effective. Together, they solve the problem. The Sulfate Reducer Kill Test illustrates the powerful biocidal action of such mixtures. For example, using 1 part TBTO to 5 parts of alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride in a concentration of less than 20 ppm results in complete destruction of the bacteria. (See illustration below left.) TBTO keeps its biological activity for long periods of time. It stays active in alkaline solutions and dilute mineral acids at room temperatures. It remains stable up to 140°C for 30 minutes. Generally, TBTO suffers no deactivation by cationic, nonionic or anionic surfactants. bioMeT TBTO has a tremendous affinity for cellulose... one of the reasons why it is so effective in protecting wood in marine environments and in odor control on washable fabrics. Even under severe leaching conditions it continues to afford control. Its bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties suggest its incorporation in plastics and emulsion paints. We also have evidence that TBTO can be used to stop fungi that attack adhesives, leather, and wax. Use bioMeT TBTO formulations alone or in combination with mercurials, chlorinated phenols, organic sulfur compounds, and quaternary ammonium compounds. They offer a wide range of possible formulations to suit your application.

The propyltins, for example, appear to be excellent mildewcides in paints. Exposure tests with long oil alkyd paints in Southern Florida show that approximately 0.25% of tripropyltin completely inhibits fungus growth on this easily attacked paint

after exposures of 5 months. On the other hand, the same concentration of phenylmercuric oleate offers only partial protection. (See unretouched photo above.) M&T triphenyltin compounds are now being investigated for use as agricultural fungicides. We will be happy to supply you with additional data.
