KELLOGG AND GBI6Y TEAM UP To Produce More Aatrex" Herbicide at Lower Cost FROM RESEARCH LAR To meet increasing market demands for its Aatrex herbicide, Geigy Chemical came up with a new idea to streamline production operations and increase capacity. Kellogg was asked to study and evaluate the proposed design. Kellogg did this . . . and more. Using its broad experience in reacting solid materials in fluidized form, Kellogg's Research and Engineering Development group carried the herbicide production problem through several development phases, designing and constructing two pilot plants and assisting with their operation. While proving out the new method, Kellogg studied the existing process and recommended a modified reactor design which would reduce costs while retaining a familiar operating technique. Based on the modifications, which were tested and proved successful, Kellogg, in
collaboration with Geigy, processdesigned, engineered, and is now constructing a commercial size, continuousprocess herbicide plant in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. In addition to the main process unit, Kellogg is building facilities for product blending, storage, packaging, and shipping. Complete offsites are also being supplied, including a utility plant, electric substation, waste treatment facilities, and water supply and treatment. From evaluation to realization, the interchange of ideas that was so productive in the Geigy project typifies Kellogg's ability to "team up" with clients in achieving their economic and production goals.
