NEW JERSEY ZINC'S FIRST AMMONIA PLANT
The New Jersey Zinc Company has entered the petrochemical field with a new plant pro ducing 100 tons/day of high-purity anhydrous ammonia. A major step in the company's newproduct program, the plant is now in operation at the main smelting works in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. • To assure the success of the new venture from the start, New Jersey Zinc tookfulladvantageof Kellogg'spetrochemica! know-howandmorethan25years'experience in ammonia plant design. Working closely with New Jersey Zinc, Kellogg made exten sive technical and economic studies that de fined the project, then undertook complete responsibility for design, engineering, pro curement, and construction. • RESULT:Com pleted ahead of schedule, only five months after ground breaking, the Kellogg-designed plant is producingcommercial, metallurgical, and refrigeration grade ammonia of excep tional quality and will serve producers of ex-
plosives, synthetic fibers, plastics, textiles, refrigerants and agricultural products, among others. • RESULT : The ammonia is produced from natural gas—economically—using Kellogg's high-pressure s t e a m - m e t h a n e reforming process. Typical cost-saving fea tures: new arrangement for tube manifolds to prevent heat loss and minimize pressure drop ; effective recovery of waste heat to gen erate all of the plant's steam and supply heat to key process streams; and, as an added economy, installation of all compression services on a common frame, Β Kellogg's diversity of experience and ability to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services in depth, are helping to make New Jersey Zinc's first step into petrochemicals both sound and economical.
