solution may constitute a buffer system. In the radiolysis of 10 wt 95 KTPB, it is necessary to consider the direct action of the radiation with the solute. In such a situation, the amount of energy deposited in the solid complex is approximately proportional to its weight fraction in the wet slurry. In addition, reactions will occur at the surface (direct and indirect action), as well as in the water that makes up the slurry. Since the solubility of KTPB is 1.8 X 10" M,in an equilibrium situation there should be enough tetraphenylborate ions to intercept all available OH' radicals via reaction 10 or 16. Actually, in the absence of stirring, the tetraphenylborate ion concentration may fall below the equilibrium value. At the same time, radiolysis products will accumulate, so that at high doses OH' radicals may cause secondary reactions on first-generationradiolysis products. In fact, such behavior is seen in high-dose experiments., In the case of direct action on KTPB crystals in the slurry, it is suggested that radiation damage at localizad lattice sites converts (K+ B(C6HS)i) ion pairs into (K+C,&H,-) ion pairs and neutral B(C6H5)3via reaction 24.
