Kinetics of the Hydrolysis of Orthoesters: A General Acid-Catalyzed Reaction An Undergraduate Physical Organic Chemistry Experiment Using NMR To Determine Both Rate Constants of a Two-Route Mechanism Richard A. Potts and Ruth A. Schaller University of Michigan-Dearborn, Dearborn, MI 48128
As more advanced instrumentation is made available for use by undergraduates, suitable experiments are needed. With the great importance of NMR spectroscopy to chemistry, this experiment was developed to give students some experience in this area. The reaction itselfis not a simple one, but follows two routes in its mechanism. Both the NMR method used to follow the reaction and the reaction itself provide a challenging experiment for advanced undergraduate students.
