ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

Minute volumes can be pipetted with the liquid touching only the inside of a piece of flexible tubing with Model P-300 valveless electric pipetter. Presterilized Tygon or any other stan dard tubing is used as the actual pipet in the dispensing system. Sterile media or various acids and alkalis can be pipetted with repeated accu racy by the touch of a button or footswitch. A knob is adjusted for the volume desired. C 0 2 Laser Model 948, a medium power, ad vanced C 0 2 laser, was developed for use in telemetry, heterodyne studies, para metric and second harmonic generation studies, and general laboratory experi mentation. Frequency stability of Model 948 is better than 30 kHz short term and 15 MHz long term. Ampli tude stability is less than 0.1% short term and 5% long term. The instru ment features a sealed tube eliminating the need for bulky and expensive gas handling apparatus. More than 5 W of power are emitted in a TEM ooq mode at a single wavelength near 10.6 microns. Beam diameter is approxi mately 7 mm with a beam divergence of less than 10 milliradians. Model 948 is frequency tunable by ±25 MHz by a piezoelectrically-controlled mirror. The laser tube uses a nonhygroscopic Brewster window to provide a polarized output. The water-cooled quartz cav ity structure is thermally and me chanically stable so that the mirrors never need adjustment. Sylvania Elec tronic Systems, Electro Optics Organi zation, P. O. Melter can analyze carbon samples on the melt shop floor in less than 3 minutes from spoon to final analysis. Also provides all carbon analysis required in heat treating operations. • No waiting for the chemical laboratory — he checks the carbon whenever he likes • Chemical laboratory a c c u r a c y no extra man needed. Sulfur analysis also possible. • Follow carbons from 4.50% down to tapping (magnetic methods give no control above 1.25% carbon) • Precise, rapid carbon analysis: malleable, cast, modular irons; ferro alloys; carbides; other materials • Scores in use: research and control laboratories; melt shops. Thousands of tons tapped daily on this instrument.
