The versatility of Raney nickel catalyst in bringing about numerous reductions with hydrogen under moderate conditions of temperature and pressure is well estab lished. For example, olefines can be cheaply and rapidly reduced to paraffins, ketones to alcohols and nitro compounds, oximes or nitriles to amines. More recent applications include stages in the prepa ration of steroid hormones and the reduc tion of aldol to l:3-butandiol, an inter mediate for Buna rubber. The British Drug Houses is now manu facturing this catalyst in a stable nonpyrophoric preparation from which the fully active catalyst can be regenerated by the simple process of washing with alcohol. The preparation is packaged in small cylinders, each containing 0.5 g. of Raney nickel. The use of one or more cylinders permits rapid, exact measuring. I t has excellent keeping properties, no significant diminution in catalytic activ ity observed after storage at room tem perature for six months. The catalyst is offered for laboratory use in ting of 25 cylinders for $3.85 per tin. Bulk quotations for industrial supplies will be given on request.
