letters Environmental impact statements
DEARSIR: I would like t o correct an error in the “Federal Report” on page 210 of your March 1972 issue which states that the Bureau of Reclamation contracted with Battelle-Northwest for the design of an environmental impact evaluation system. This work was, in fact, performed by Battelle-Columbus, a sister organization of Battelle-Northwest, under two contracts. Your readers may be interested to know that the results of the first contract (methodology development) are now available from the National Technical Information Service, Springfield, Va.-refer to PB-201-743. Results of the second study (methodology testing and refinement) should be public in a few months. Neil L. Drobny Battelle-Columbus Laboratories Columbus, Ohio 43201 Udall follows through
Here’s a new bulletin, on the care and treatment of industrial water systems, that covers a wide range of operating problems. It recommends the right ENPROX’” additive to control the troublemakers in circulating water systems - and to eliminate pollutants in waste waters. For example, it charts various ways you can inhibit scale build-up, sludging, corrosive attack, slime and algae fouling. Shows you how, with still other ENPROX environment-protecting products, you can neutralize effluents. Clarify incoming or outgoing waters. Adsorb oil and separate solids. Reduce toxic compounds and precipitate heavy metals in waste solutions. Kill foam. With 63 years’ experience helping water do a better job of cleaning, Oakite, with its specialized ENPROX line, is in a good position to help you clean up this most widely used industrial resource. First step to see how you can benefit: send for the ENPROX bulletin. Next: ask Oakite in to make a water survey.

DEARSIR: In the April 1972 issue, your interview with Stewart Udall on the work of the Overview Corp. in total environmental planning was excellent. There was mention of his project in Hawaii and the formulation of an “open space plan.” What Mr. Udall said in this interview about follow-through is absolutely true. Too often, consultants deliver a foot-hign document and expect the officials not only to understand it but to effect implementation. Here in Hawaii, Stewart Udall and his Overview Team have actually worked with the legislature to assist any necessary implementation. While much of this follow-up will take place at the 1973 legislative session, this service should be noted because it is unique. Further, I can speak as an environmental leader in confirming that, wherever possible, he has solicited any and all opinions and advice locally before jumping into the details of his assignment. In short, he does an excellent job. We look forward to seeing him back in Hawaii soon. Scott D. Hamilton, Jr.
