LETTERS Oil desulfurization Dear Sir: I read with interest the excellent article on desulfurization refinery capacities ( E S & T . June 1973, pp 494-6). I t is only natural, however, that we were disappointed in not finding McKee among the engineering and construction firms mentioned in the article. Particularly as M c K e e is the prime contractor furnishing engineering and construction services for Lago Oil & Transport Co.’s desulfurization project in Aruba, Netherlands Antilles. This $100 million project will double the output of low-sulfur industrial fuel oil at Lago’s petroleum refinery in Aruba. Lago Oil & Transport Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Exxon Corp.

R. A. Leighton Director, Marketing Communications Arthur G. McKee & Co. Cleveland, Ohio 44131 Physical-chemical treatment Dear Sir: The article on physicalchemical treatment at Reichhold in the M a r c h issue (page 200) is very thorough and informative. However, I have one minor concern. That concern stemmed from the first paragraph, which I felt may lead some of your readers to assume that the Reichhold system is the first of its kind in industry. I t is really the latest of a series of waste water adsorption treatment systems. Some of the others include: Stepan Chemical Co., Fieldsboro, N.J. -reduces detergent wastes measured as COD f r o m an average of 28,000 m g / l . to 1000 m g / l . and TOC from an average of 6310 m g / l . to 289 mg,’l. Atlantic-Richfield Co., Watson Refinery, Los Angeles, Calif. -reduces refinery wastes measured as COD from 250 m g / l . to 37 m g / l . Stephen-Leedom Carpet Co., Southampton, Pa. -removes organic dyes from 80% of its waste water and reuses this water in its dyeing operation General Electric Co., Pittsfield, Mass.-uses a mobile granular carbon unit to remove fluorescein green dye and other dissolved organics Chipman Division of Rhodia, Inc., Portland, Ore. -reduces chlorinated phenolics from 100 m g / l . to a maximum of 1.O m g / l . While these are not all straightforward physical-chemical treatment systems, they do demonstrate the ability of granular activated carbon to handle a variety of dissolved organic contaminants in waste water.

ALL- PLASTIC NOTEBOOKSt4EW FROM NALGE, mmm

One liquid spill-and countless hours of effort are ruined. Why risk it? Nalge introduces maximum security for your written observations with notebooks that protect them against everything but fire. These notebooks are made entirely of plastic. The spun-bonded polyethylene pages are waterproof and unaffected by chemical spills. They won’t tear, fray, curl, discolor, rot or mildew. Each page is numbered and printed with a light green grid with space for authenticating and witnessing entries for maximum patent protection. Available in two versions: NALGENE@ LABORATORY NOTEBOOK (Cat. No. 6300-1000) is bound like a book in hard polyethylene covers, accepts ballpoint writing. NALGENE FIELD NOTEBOOK (Cat. No. 63031000) has specially treated polyethylene pages to accept pencil when wet (yes, even under water), any writing instrument when dry. It’s bound in a soft polyethylene cover with rust-proof staples. A superb notebook for the field scientist. The same specially treated polyethylene paper used in the field notebook, (which we call PolyPaper’”), is available separately-100 8%’’ x 11” sheets to a package (Cat. No. 63040811). It’s ideal for outdoor notices, labels enclosed in wet or dry chemicals and specimens, or general note taking in any messy surroundings. Order the notebooks or PolyPaper from your Lab Supply Dealer.
