AVID E. LILIENTHAL, erstwhile law-
yer turned successful business executive and developer of resources, will address the Golden Anniversary Banquet a t the ACS meeting in Chicago, Tuesday, Sept. 9. T h e banquet, sponsored hy the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of that and four other divisions, as well as the establishment of the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. T h e choice is a stimulating one. Although Lilienthal is not a scientist, h e has experienced science's effect on what has generally been regarded as nonscientific fields of thought and action. H e will express hi* own convictions about the future role of science in influencing men's thinking, values, and institutions. This theme is evident in his writings (three books ) : "TVA—Democracy on the March" ( 1 9 4 4 ) ; "This I Do Believe" ( 1 9 4 9 ) ; and "Big Business: A .
N e w Era" ( 1 9 5 3 ) . In each, Lilienthal expresses an optimistic belief in people's ability to use the- tools of science and technology to enricH their l i v e s - t o master progress, rather t h a n be controlled by it. Perhaps most widely known for his association with the- Tennessee Valley Authority, Lilienthal was a m e m b e r of the first board of directors of TVA appointed in 1933. He served as director 1933-41 and as board chairman 1941-46. Xext h e was n a m e d first Chairman of t h e U . S. Atomic Energy Commission, serving 1946-50. David E . The banquet at \vhidh Lilienthal will speak will be one of the peak functions in a series of programs recognizing the establishment of the divisional system in the ACS with the beginning of five divisions: Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Fertilizer -and Soil Chemistry, and Physical and Inorganic Chemistry (now the Division of Physical Chemistry). Also honored will be the 50th year of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, which began in 1908 as the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, from which has grown the Applied Publications group. Clifford F. Rassweiler, ACS President, as toastmaster at the banquet, will introduce the speaker. DeWitt O. Myattof Atlantic Research Corp., chairman of the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, and a former managing editor of IirEC, will preside. Honorary chairman for the event will be M. C. Whitaker, who served as second editor of IàrEC.
Rassweiler to Talk on Incentives at Chicago How do you get the right people working aggressively and enthusiastically where you need them? Basically—whether it's scientific education, industrial productivity, or weapons development that you are worrying about —the answer is to be found in incentives, according to ACS President Clifford F. Rassweiler. "Progress—a matter of incentives" is the topic he will explore in his presidential address at the General Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago's 8th Street Theater at 8:30 P . M . Monday, Sept. 8. As part of the evening's business, Rassweiler will also announce the winners of ACS awards for 1959.
Rubber Celebration Faculty, students, and alumni of the University of Akron will celebrate the· 50th Anniversary of the Teaching of Rubber Chemistry at the University on Oct. 3 . They will join with rubber scientists, researchers, and educators interested in the research, physical, and chemical development aspects of the rubber industry in ceremonies establishing the Rubber Science Hall of Fame on the Akron campus. Norman P. Auburn, president of the university, will give "the keynote address at a morning convocation. In
