THE DU PONT LC COLUMN

New bimodal SEC revolutionizes analysis of polymer molecular weight distribution. Innovative technology devel oped by Du Pont now enables you to analyze polymeric sys t e m s having extremely wide molecular weight ranges with unprecedented speed and pre cision. Just a single pair of our new bimodal high-performance size exclusion columns does the job. Covering the molecular weight range of 10 2 to about 4 χ 106, the bimodal technique is the most significant develop ment in molecular weight distri bution analysis since Du Pont introduced high-performance, high-temperature size exclusion chromatography two years ago. The bimodal technique removes the guesswork in tai loring resins for specific properties, selecting optimum reaction conditions, comparing resin batches against stan dards, evaluating alterations in process formulations and solv ing many other polymer pro duction and p r o c e s s i n g problems.

New Zorbax* P S M packings are keys. Du Pont has developed two all-new packings with pore sizes of approximately 60 and 1000 Angstrom. These sizes were carefully matched to polymer analysis requirements. Coup ling two Zorbax PSM columns gives you an SEC system with an exceptionally wide linear range of calibration, as shown

in Figure 1. The uncertainty in matching multiple columns for t h e right m o l e c u l a r weight range has been eliminated. These silica-based packings are produced by the patented Zorbax technology, which has become a recognized standard for chromatography. Their high performance results from their rigid, stable nature coupled with close control of pore structure. Zorbax PSM 6 0 and PSM 1000 columns are both availa ble in a chemically bonded silanized form for organic sol vents and in untreated form for aqueous applications. The s i l a n i z e d form e l i m i n a t e s adsorption without creating undesirable partition effects. In addition, Zorbax PSM 6 0 columns give extremely high resolution when used alone for materials under 1000 in molec ular weight. Figure 2 shows an excellent separation of the wellknown epoxy oligomers.
