Acetyl Glutothione S-acetyl glutathione is available in research quantities from Schwartz Laboratories. Supplied in a chromatographically pure grade, the material has served as a valuable tool for biochemical studies of transacetylation a n d energy transfer in cell metabolism. Because the product is closely related to glutathione, Schwartz expects it to be of value in studies of detoxification, radiation exposure, renal function, and other mechanisms involving sulfhydryl groups. The acetyl glutathione molecule also represents a source of high energy which can be made available by splitting the bond between the acetyl group and the glutathione molecule. T h e biochemical energy released by this splitting is of the PE9 order of 10,000 calories per mole.
Catalyst Deactivator to Prolong Shelf Life of Pesticides A humectant developed by the chemical division of Marathon Corp. has shown promise as a catalyst deactivator for pesticide formulations. T h e decomposition during storage of pesticides, especially the chlorinated hydrocarbons, has been attributed t o the so called catalytic activity of the carrier or diluent used in the formulation. Marathon claims that their product called Maracarb N has proved effective in laboratory tests in nullifying this catalytic activity, thereby prolonging the shelf life of the PElO d r y pesticide formulations.
Insecticides for Food Industries KlenzadeProducts, Inc., of Beloit, \Vis., is offering a line of four insecticidal products for use in the dairy and food industries. T h e company claims that the sprays can be used with reliable safety around milk and food handling equipment and yet offer a means of quick knock down and kill of flying and crawling insects. T h e insecticides, designated as fly, roach, cattle and residual spray, all contain high concentrations of pyrenone with lindane and methyoxychlor added to the residual spray to increase PEll persistance.
Monsanto Producing Fumaric Acid Fumaric acid in commercial quantities is available from Monsanto Chemical Co. .4 crystalline free flowing granule, the product is used principally in the production of resins for surface coatings and inks, where its high melting point results in higher softening resins. Other uses of fumaric acid are as a modifer of pthalic type alkyds and as a n acidulant PE12 for pelatin.
