TAKE A LOOK AT LITHIUM . . . A RECOGNIZED REAGENT IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS LITHIUM METAL

REAGENTS

Application: Organic Chemistry— Lithium organic compounds, both alkyls and aryls, are used to advantage in organic synthesis of the Grignard type, particularly where the mag nesium Grignard reacts sluggishly or in poor yield. They are also used for the preparation of organometallic compounds of other metals.

Analytical C h e m i s t r y Lithium is used as an analytical nitrogen in rare gases.

reagent for

Metallurgy— Lithium is used in metallurgy as a degasifier, deoxidizer, desulfurizer and general purifying agent, particularly for copper and copper base alloys.

T h e Roto-Cell replaces t h e singleplace sample holder regularly supplied with t h e instrument. I t permits rapid interchange within t h e colorimeter of a 1-ml. sample with a blank or standard, thereby facilitating preparation of spec tral transmission or absorption curves. T h e device consists of a swivel action water-jacketed holder, a slotted carrier for two 1-ml. cells having 10-mm. light paths, and a control knob with stops for positioning either cell or for com pletely blocking t h e light beam t o check dark current adjustment. T h e holder has an inlet and an outlet for attaching an external cooling system for use in maintaining t h e cells a t optimum work ing temperatures. 19

Waring Blender A Waring Blendor of 1-gallon capacity for blending, pulping, a n d mixing larger quantities of materials t h a n could be handled b y previous models is now avail able from Central Scientific Co. I t has five speeds ranging from 8000 t o 16,000 r.p.m. T h e Blendor has a stainless steel con tainer with a handle for easy pouring. T h e container h a s a two-section cover with snap-on latches and a removable Plexiglas lid for sampling or adding m a terial. 20

Proportional Counter Converter

Write Suite Ρ for Data Sheets on Any Or All of the Above Listed Products

A proportional counter converter with built-in low voltage power supply and needle valve for gas flow control h a s been developed by Nuclear Measure ments Corp. T h e unit, Model PCC-14, converts a n y scaler with a high voltage range of 600 to 2000 volts t o a propor tional counter. T h e instrument can be used t o count alpha and both hard and soft beta ac tivity. I t will count such samples as precipitates, evaporated salts, com pressed pellets, and filtered materials. I n p u t sensitivity is set a t 0.001 volt and is adjustable from 0.0005 t o 0.0025 volt. Connections required are t o a 115-volt a.c. line, t o a cylinder of count ing gas, and t o t h e input of t h e scaler. 21

Vacuum Gage

—When reacting with H2O generates approxi mately 45 cubic ft. per lb. reduced to 0°C. and 760 mm. at pressures as high as 2100 lb. per sq. in. and at rates as high as 8 cubic ft. per min. per lb. One cubic ft. of LiH weighing about 50 lbs. will generate 2250 cubic ft. of H2 reduced to 0°C. and 760 mm.

ionXchange LABORATORY SIZE OF CARTRIDGE DE-IONIZER GIVES MINERAL-FREE WATER The latest development in ionXchange equipment is the mixed-bed de-ionizer, which combines both anion and cation resins in one vessel or tank. The unit shown below is a miniature model of such a de-ionizer, made up in such a manner as to be an ideal accessory in any laboratory where mineralfree water is wanted occasionally in compara tively small quantities. The ILLCO-WAY Cartridge De-Ionizer consists of a plastic tubular column containing 3 lbs. of mixed resin. When the resins are exhausted, as shown by a change in color, the entire cartridge can be discarded and a fresh one substituted. N o electrical connections are needed. The column can be clamped, as shown, in any convenient location o r manner. RESEARCH MODEL
