Long on potential, too, as versatile building blocks for hard polymers., elastomers...coating resins

Hard polymers for extrusion and molding operations can be made by copolymerizing small amounts of a long-chain alkyl vinyl ether (L-AVE), e.g., 3-5 wgt. %, with such monomers as vinyl chloride, ethylene, propylene, acrylonitrile and others. In a particular case, a vinyl chloride copolymer containing only 3 wgt. % hexadecyl vinyl ether was processable at temperatures 50-100°F below that for PVC, with minimal loss of heat distortion temperature. There are many other advantages to using L-AVE... processing at lower temperatures... faster extrusion rates...greater heat stability.,, fewer compounding additives needed, such as external lubricants and processing aids... good chemical resistance... excellent color and glass-like clarity when compounded with FDAapproved heat stabilizers... good permanent low-temperature properties. Elastomers and coating resins may be internally plasticized by using L-AVE as a comonomer, yielding optimal property retention and performance... low-temperature flexibility...chemical resistance...hydrolytic stability... good flow characteristics, especially at low temperatures... improved solubility in coating solvents.

The following long-chain alkyl vinyl ethers are readily available in drum quantities from GAF: Isooctyl vinyl ether, decyl vinyl ether, dodecyl vinyl ether (lauryl), hexadecyl vinyl ether (cetyl), octadecyl vinyl ether (stearyl). Intrigued with L-AVE? Samples will be sent promptly for evaluation in your application.
