Low Cost Polymeric Plasticizers Bow Emery Industries introduces four new products, aims at markets now held by monomerics Four new polymeric plasticizers are now being marketed by Emery Industries, Cincinnati. The low-cost products, Plastolein 9722, 9730, 9750, and 9765, feature improved stability and performance, Emery says. With these products Emery hopes to expand greatly today's market for polymeric plasticizers, an estimated 30 million pounds a year. The company also hopes to invade markets now held by monomelic materials. The plasticizers are used primarily in vinyls. Emery is applying for patents on all four products. All the new products are the result of "unique chemistry," Emery says. High performance is obtained with relatively low molecular weight materials. In the past good performance has been primarily a function of molecular weight, but apparently Emery has found a way around this. For example, Emery claims that Plastolein 9730 performs as well as products with twice its molecular weight. Cost Cuts. Emery is cutting the price of azelaic acid three cents per pound to 37 cents this week. The company is also cutting the prices of azelaic esters and Plastolein 9078 LT, a proprietary plasticizer based on azelaic acid. Behind the lower price tags is Emery's new $6 million ozone-oxidation plant at Cincinnati, which has just come on stream. This facility gives Emery a several-fold increase in capacity for azelaic and pelargonic acids, starting materials for plasticizers. Emery says its ozone production techniques and equipment yield perhaps the lowest cost ozone in the U.S. The ozone is used to split the double bond of oleic acid to get azelaic and pelargonic acids. High Performance. Claims for the new plasticizers include improved humidity and outdoor aging, better compatibility and permanence, and good soapy water resistance. Top performer is Plastolein 9765, priced at 40 cents per lb. Strongest
points include excellent permanence, the best resistance to extraction by hexane, and outstanding resistance to humidity aging. Aging tests were done by South Florida Test Service, and the Emery products showed up well after 600 hours in the sun. Emery says Plastolein 9765 will perform as well as competitive materials costing 45 to 50 cents per lb. Lowest cost material is Plastolein 9730 at 34 cents per lb. This gets it down fairly close to monomeric plasticizers which average 25 to 30 cents per lb. Emery sees this product as tough competition for some monomerics.
BRIEFS Chromatographic solid support is available from The Fluoro-Carbon Co., Anaheim, Calif. The material, Fluoropak 80, is effective in reducing tailing caused by adsorption of highly polar components by active sites on support material. This is significant in the analysis of ammonia, amines, water, hydrogen chloride, and other highly polar substances. Its inert chemical properties make it adaptable for use with highly corrosive substances, such as acetic acid, chlorine, bromine, and hydrogen sulfide, the company says. CI Epoxy resin designed for filament winding processes is available from Union Carbide Plastics, New York, N.Y. Bakélite epoxy ERL-0500 has low viscosity and is easy to handle. Properly cured, it has good mechanical properties, the company claims. C 2 Self-crosslinking resin latex, X-Link 2833, that can be used as a binder has been developed by National Starch and Chemical Corp., New York, N.Y. This new vinyl-acrylic copolymer dispersion is designed to crosslink without the addition of thermosetting resins. It forms strong and flex-
ible films, resistant to water, solvents, and creep. Use of the latex eliminates problems of stability, odor, compatibility, and high curing temperatures usually associated with combinations of thermosetting and thermoplastic resins, National says. Applications for X-Link 2833 include nonwoven fabrics, wallpaper coverings, adhesives, and textile finishes. C 3
Indicator tablets for acid-base titrations are available from Fisher Scientific, Pittsburgh, Pa. Metab indicator tablets can also be used for chelometric titrations of most metals, and end points are sharp, the company says. Each Metab contains 0.5 mg. of the sodium salt of 3,3'-[bis-N, N'-di(carboxymethyl)-aminomethyl] - thymolsulfonphthalein, formulated with specially selected binder. C4
Epoxy in pellet form has been introduced by Epoxy Products, Irvington, N.J. The epoxy pellets can bond most hard-to-bond materials, the company claims. They are designed for good chemical and solvent resistance, low moisture permeability, and good electrical characteristics. By modifying pellet composition, the bonding material can be made either flexible or rigid. Curing temperature can be varied from 85° C. for bonding heatsensitive components to 250° C. for a fast cure bond. C5
Two glycol-ethers, Ucar solvents LM and 2LM, are available from Union Carbide Chemicals, New York, N.Y. Ucar solvent LM is propylene glycol methyl ether; Ucar solvent 2LM is dipropylene glycol methyl ether. Because of the low toxicity of these two materials they are attractive as solvents, humectants, and preservatives in the food and cosmetic industries, the company says. C6
Coating that resists abrasion and a broad range of organic and inorganic chemicals is available from Farboil Co., Baltimore, Md. The polyester isocyanate copolymer, Curamene, is designed for use on surfaces that are subjected to severe abrasion. It can be applied over a wide range of temperatures, is unaffected by high humidity while curing, and has a flash point of over 100° F., the company says. C 7 J U N E 12, 1961 C & E N

Two methacrylate monomers are be ing offered by Rohm & Haas, Philadel phia, Pa. The compounds dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and feri-butylaminoethyl methacrylate (ί-BAEMA) offer a way of introduc ing pendant, reactive amine groups into plastics, elastomers, coatings, and fibers. They are also useful as chemi cal intermediates, since their amine groups and double bonds can enter into a variety of reactions. C 12

Resin for making plastisols with low fusion temperatures comes from B. F . Goodrich Chemical Co., Cleveland, Ohio. The new polyvinyl chloride co polymer, Geon 135, has a fusion tem perature of 300° F. for plastisols based on the resin, the company says. Geon 135 can be used for molding, stencil printing on calendered or extruded vinyl sheeting, and as a tie-coat for laminating film to fabric, the company claims. Plastisols based on Geon 135 are useful for spread coatings on heat sensitive materials. C 13
