Shiromaru, and Y.Achiba* Department of Chemistry, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Hachioji, Tokyo 192-03, Japan (Received: July 16, 1992; In Final Form: September 23, 1992) Collision of negative carbon cluster ions with a MoSz surface are studied in a low-impact energy region (0-1 keV) of the electron emission process. Experiments reveal that there are two different kinds of emission processes in this energy region, one of which is governed simply by the incident velocity of the clusters. The other one is a narrow peak which appears at a lower energy region and is observed only in the cases of certaintypes of clusters. The strong correlation between the appearance of the latter process and the structure of the clusters suggests that electrons are detached from clusters through a mechanism which is quite effective in a specific energy region.

Introduction The various interactions which occur with the collision of clusters with solid surfaces give much insight into the production of new materials as well as an understanding of the nature of the clusters. Many reports have been made on this issue,' particularly with regard to collisions in the high-energy region (>1 keV). On the other hand, on the subject of lower energy collisions (
