Based on past experience, magnesia in catalysts poses a problem in regenerability. However, compared to alumina-silica catalysts, adding small amounts of magnesia has little effect on carbon burning rates, Dr. DeBaun explains. A test of magnesia-silica does show a significant loss in carbon burning rate, though, of nearly 50%. Economics of the new catalysts will vary with the particular refinery use. If a refiner needs olefins for polymer gasoline, for chemical use, or for alkylate, the magnesia-containing catalysts should have definite value, according to preliminary figures worked out by Dr. DeBaun. American Cyanamid does not have commercial use data available yet. However, a trial run of the 2 0 % alumina-3% magnesia is in base line status at a Shell Oil refinery. C1
