The A D V A N C E S IN C H E M I S T R Y SERIES was founded in 1949

by

the American Chemical Society as an outlet for symposia and collections of data in special areas of topical interest that could not be accommodated in the Society's journals. It provides a medium for symposia that would otherwise be fragmented because their papers would be distributed among several journals or not published at all. Papers are reviewed critically according to ACS editorial standards and receive the careful attention and processing characteristic of ACS publications. Volumes in the A D V A N C E S IN CHEMISTRY SERIES maintain the integrity of the symposia on which they are based; however, verbatim reproductions of previously published papers are not accepted. Papers may include reports of research as well as reviews, because symposia my embrace both types of presentation.

R O B E R T E . B O T T O is a research chemist

in the Chemistry Division at Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois. His research involves the characterization of fossil fuels, polymers, and heterogeneous catalysts by solid-state N M R spectroscopy and imaging. He currently holds the position of Director of the Chemistry Division N M R Laboratory. In addition to authoring more than 50 scientific publications, he has presented as many papers at national and international meetings and has organized numerous national and international symposia. He is a member of the Sigma X i Honorary Research Society and the American Chemical Society, where he served as Secretary of the Fuel Chemistry Division from 1987 to 1989 and Newsletter Editor in 1990. He received his A B . degree in chemistry in 1968 from Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He received his M.S. degree in chemistry from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, in 1970. Following two years of service in the U.S. Army Science and Engineering Corps, he returned to Michigan State University where he received his PhD. degree in 1975.

Y u z o S A N A D A is a professor with the Faculty of Engineering of the Metals Research Institute at Hokkaido University. After receiving his B.Eng. degree from Toyama University and his Ph.D. from Tohoku University, he performed his postdoctoral work with the Research Council of Alberta in Edmonton. Before joining the faculty at Hokkaido University, he performed research for the Resources Research Institute (1954-1965) and was a senior researcher at the National Research Institute for Pollution and Resources (1965- 1975). His research expertise is in coal chemistry, heavy hydrocarbons, and carbon material science, and he specializes in the constitution and structural analysis of coal and related carbonaceous materials, the chemistry of coal liquefaction, and the pyrolysis and carbonization of coal and pitch. He received the Japan Petroleum Institute Medal in 1975 and 1990 and the Fuel Society of Japan Medal in 1976. He has written several books on coal and carbonization engineering. He has also authored more than 200 papers. In addition, he is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Energy and Fuels and a board member of both the Fuel Society of Japan and the Carbon Society of Japan.
