NEW PRODUCTS ing to Cahn Instrument Co. But the company adds that the balance will be preferred by laboratories with a wide variety of samples as well. The instru ment has six scale ranges, each start ing from zero and extending, as selected, to 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, or 100 mg. Precison on the lower ranges is one micro gram, and accuracy is 0.05% of full scale on most ranges, according to Cahn. Featuring one-knob control and one dial for weight reading, the unit has the same range of sample containers as the company's Cahn electrobalance, and it can be operated remotely. P-l 3 Bench Type Electric Furnaces Four new utility-size electric fur naces, the Type 1300 series, have been added to the line available from Thermo Electric Mfg. Co. All four models have the same dimensions and general construction, but they differ in voltage requirements (115 or 230 volts) and in mode of temperature control. The heating element, a coiled nickelchromium wire embedded in a sectionalized refractory plate, completely lines the sides and top of the chamber. It is replaceable from the back of the furnace. Temperature control in two

In all models, chamber temperature is measured by a thermocouple, and indicated on a double scale pyrometer calibrated in 50° increments to 1250° C. and 2250° F. P-l4 Nylon Enclosed Mercury Switch

of the models is by a current control knob which permits selection of any temperature between 350° F. and the maximum. The company says it main tains constant watt-hour input and even temperature regardless of line voltage fluctuations. The other two models have a 5-position switch connected to a resistor in the furnace base; these set at 0, 500, 1000, 1250, and 1500 degrees F. All models have maximum temperature limits of 1650° F. continuous and 1900° F. intermittant, the latter being attainable through a boost switch.

A nylon enclosed mercury switch that resists the effects of shock and splashing fluids is developed by Micro Switch. Designated 7MP1-2, it consists of a glass tube mercury switch embedded in a synthetic rubber compound and en closed in a nylon can. Company says the resilient embedment material les sens the effect of vibration and provides insulation and a seal for the lead entrance.
