solid by transmission measurement in the visible and near ultraviolet regions is readily carried out, and intercomparisons of up to four samples is easily made. Complete absorption spectra may be plotted or readings made at one selected wave length. P-47

Elpac, developed in South Africa and distributed here by Spex Industries, Inc., automatically loads graphite elec trodes. The material can be packed into electrodes (three can be packed at one time) in seconds. Steel plung ers arc custom designed for the typo of electrode used. This device is the first South African instrument to be distributed in the U. S. P-46

Quartz Spectrophotometer The photoelectric quartz spectro photometer—SP. 500—by Unicam of England is designed for qualitative and quantitative determinations by per centage absorption or transmission of light at wave lengths in the range 2000 to 10,000 A.

Ail-Purpose Spectrophotometer

Unicam, an English company, offers a new all-purpose spectrophotometer

to keep out dust and moisture. With a new prism, the wave length range of the SP. 500 is extended from 200 to 186 πΐμ. P-48

Modulation System Varian Associates' V-4560 100-kc. field modulation and control unit has the purpose of raising the EPR spec trometer modulation to as high a value as practicable. The system provides the means for generation of the 100-kc. sweep field, and for amplification and phase detection of the EPR signal. The multipurpose EPR cavity and connecting waveguide bend combine with the unit to form the 100-kc. modu lating system, completely compatible with the present EPR spectrometer. The resulting increase in sensitivity over the present V-4500 EPR spec trometer, operating at modulation fre quency of 400 cycles, is about 16. P-49

Variable Temperature System called the SP. 600. It has a Littrow monochromator with glass prism. Measurements are made by either ab sorption or transmission. Analysis of an unknown solution or transparent

TIMERS

The variable new temperature sys tem, by Varian Associates, permits EPR samples to be observed over a wide range—-from —185° C. (liquid N 2 ) to 300° C. A copper heat exchanger cools dry nitrogen gas to a temperature depending on the rate of flow.
