at the University of Illinois, has been selected National Chairman of the ACS Building F u n d Campaign, announces John H. Nair, chairman of the Planning Committee. I n making the announcement, Nair points out that the primary concern of the National Chairman is to organize t h e solicitation of subscriptions from members of the Society.

national Special a n d Corporate Gifts Committee, who will organize the solicitation of gifts for the new building from corporations, foundations, and public spirited citizens. Marvel will also personally invite one or more national figures to serve as chairman or chairmen of a sponsoring committee, which will comprise prominent chemists, past Presidents of the Society, and heads of leading industrial firms. The head of the important sponsoring committee will b e announced soon. A "kick-off" meeting of western area chairmen will be held in Chicago and a similar one for eastern area chairmen is t o be scheduled in New York City. Pep meetings are also planned in several other areas. Marvel will be present at as many of these meetings as his schedule permits. Marvel has served the ACS in m a n y capacities. H e w a s its President in 1945 and has held the posts of director, councilor-at-large, and division and local section chairman.

Marvel was selected because of his wide acquaintance with Society members, his many past services to t h e Society, a n d the high esteem with which he is regarded by ACS members. As National Chairman of the campaign, Marvel will, from h i s personal knowledge a n ^ with assistance of the Planning r o m m i t t e e and National Headquarters staff, appoint area campaign chairmen. At least two names will b e proposed for each of t h e 5 5 areas into which the country has been divided for the campaign. H e will also advise and assist the Planning Committee in selecting a chairman for a 100

New officers elected b y ACS divisions at 132nd National Meeting JL HE ACS divisions again held elections at the 132nd National Meeting in New York last month. With exception of the Divisions of Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Literature, Gas and Fuel Chemistry, and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, all officers took over their duties immediately. The new Division of Inorganic Chemistry has an election of officers under way.

Agricultural and Food Chemistry H. L. Haller, n e w chairman of t h e Division of Agricultural and Food

Chemistry, is assistant to administrator, Production Research, Agricultural Research Service, USDA. A native of Cincinnati, he received his Ph.D. from Col l . L. H a l l e r lumbia University in 1926. After a tour of duty with USDA's B u r e a u of Chemistry from 1919 to 1923, he joined the staff of Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. H e returned to the Department of Agriculture i n 1927. In 1933 Haller received the Hillebrand Prize of the Washington Chemical Society, along with F . B. LaForge, for studies on rotenone's structure. N e w chairman-elect is F . M. Strong of the University of Wisconsin. J. H. Nair, III, of Mellon Institute i s secretarytreasurer.

Analytical Chemistry John H . Yoe, chairman of the chemistry department a n d director of the Pratt trace analysis laboratory at University of Virginia, was 1956 recipient of the Fisher Award in Analytical Chemistry, s p o n s o r e d by Fisher Scientific Co., for pioneering John H . Yoe work in colorimetric analysis and organic analytical reagents. Yoe graduated from Vanderbilt University with b o t h B.S. a n d M.S. degrees and from Princeton, M.A. in 1917 and Ph.D. in 1 9 2 3 . H e is assistant editor of Analytical Chimica Acta, a member of the international committee on analytical reactions of t h e International Union of Chemistry, a n d member of the Analytical Chemistry Advisory Board. Chairman-elect is Warren W. Brandt of Purdue. Secretary-treasurer is C. N. Reiiley of t h e University of North Carolina.

Biological Chemistry Henry A. Lardy of t h e University of Wisconsin's department of biochemistry received his B.S. from South Dakota State College in 1939, an M.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1941, and Ph.D. in 1943. Immediately after graduation, h e became National Re-
