Liquid Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry Applications in Agricultural, Pharmaceutical, and Environmental Chemistry

ne of the most exciting aspects of LC/MS is its versatility and the potential it of fers for many new applications. This im portant volume provides an in-depth look at this analytical process and describes the in strumentation now available or under development. This book discusses recent innovations such as the use of thermospray and particle beam interfaces that have made LC/MS methods much more compatible for the analysis of pes ticides, pharmaceuticals, and pollutants. The first section in this 18-chapter volume describes applications of LC/MS to the analysis of polar or thermally labile agricultural chemi cals including chlorinated herbicides and pesti cide residues. The second section focuses on applications in the analysis of intractable phar maceuticals and their metabolites. The last section offers a better understand ing of LC/MS methods used in environmental analysis. Included are examples of the use of LC/MS for the analysis of target and nontarget environmental pollutants, as well as their me tabolites and conjugates. Mark A. Protein Purification From Molecular Mechanisms to Large-Scale Processes

his timely new volume gives real exam ples of how separation techniques are used in industry with recombinant pro teins, and emphasizes which techniques might be more useful than others in real world applications. With contributions from leading experts in the field, this volume covers both academic and industrial interests. It shows how series can be applied to developing strategies and emphasizes appropriate approaches for diffi cult protein separation problems. New separation techniques are evaluated for their practicality in connection with recom binant proteins on an industrial scale. These include: • adsorption • extraction • liquid chromatography • centrifugation • electrophoresis Some of the specific topics discussed are adsorptive separations, mechanisms of protein retention in hydrophobic interaction chroma tography, radial-flow affinity chromatography for trypsin purification, metal-affinity protein separation, site-specific proteolysis of fusion proteins, and the use of applied electric fields for downstream processing.
