Kolthoff Gold Medal ANALYTICAL CHEMISTS throughout t h e world will rejoice a t t h e an-'*- nouncement of t h e Gold Medal in Analytical Chemistry t o be awarded by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of t h e American Pharmaceutical Association. T o be awarded biennially t o an out standing contributor t o t h e basic discipline of analytical chemistry or to applications related to pharmaceutical analysis, t h e medal will be named in honor of Professor I . M . Kolthoff, who will be its first recipient in November 1967. I t is particularly appropriate t h a t t h e medal, originating from a pharmaceutical group, be named in honor of Professor Kolthoff, who re ceived his early training in pharmaceutical chemistry and made a num ber of significant contributions t o t h a t field. Especially, however, t h e new medal symbolizes a recognition of t h e pioneering contributions of Professor Kolthoff who, more t h a n a n y other scientist, is responsible for t h e introduction of fundamental physical and chemical principles to the understanding of t h e ancient a r t of analysis, a n d for establish ing analytical chemistry as a basic research discipline. T h e Kolthoff Gold Medal will serve as an inspiration t o young sci entists a n d also, it is hoped, as an example for industries and associa tions having a stake in the future of analytical chemistry as a scientific discipline.
