Almost everyone who has experienced the rigors of graduate education has at least one "Doc" among their memories of former teachers, research advisors, and friends. To many graduates of the University of Florida's Chemistry Department, and to countless professionals in the water chemistry and treatment field, there is a very special "Doc," Dr. Alvin Percy Black. Dr. Black's research career spans five decades and includes such topics as water fluoridation, mechanism of coagulation, measurement of low turbidity, the preparation of turbidity standards, removal of radioactive waste, and the nature of organic color in water, to cite a few. Many of his research papers have become classics for water chemistry students. Since retirement his activities have been focused on development of his patents and on his special interest in iodine disinfection and water purification processes. Dr. Black has been a member of the American Chemical Society for 50 years, and served on two occasions as Chairman of what is presently the Environmental Chemistry Division. He is a Past President of the American Water Works Association and has been the recipient of numerous awards and prizes for his research contributions and leadership in the water-treatment field. Most recently the American Chemical Society recognized Dr. Black with the Distinguished Service Award from the Division of Environmental Chemistry. All those who have had the privilege of Dr. Black's acquaintance recognize his boundless energy and his infectious sense of enthusiasm for the discovery aspects of laboratory research. Although a gifted lecturer and speaker, his most unique talent is his ability to excite those around him to the potential of carefully organized inquiry. At the age of 82, and after 47 years of outstanding service to the University of Florida, Dr. Black modestly states that his proudest accomplishments are his graduate students and what they have achieved. Anyone talking to Dr. Black presently is well aware that his enviable record is far from completion. He speaks excitedly about this current interest in the recovery of lime-softening sludges and the production of magnesium oxide for use as a sewage flocculant. He is also excited over the ongoing health effects studies on the use of iodine as an alternative waster disinfectant. The field of water chemistry is indeed fortunate to have men of the caliber of A. P. Black among its ranks.
