With this issue, the fourth for 1962, the Fundamentals Quarterly of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry completes its first year. During the year, fifty-five papers have been published, many of which will have lasting value in the literature of chemical engineer ing and industrial chemistry. These have included important re view articles as well as original contributions, both experimental and theoretical. Other excellent contributions are in hand and will appear in future issues. T h e editor believes that this record is a creditable one which could not have been achieved without the support and cooperation of both authors and reviewers. During the second year, it is hoped that a greater number of short communications and letters can also be published. Those that have been received during 1962 have added much to the value of the Quarterly, particularly for the chemical engineer who is actively engaged in research wrork. Active correspondence about the significance of published research is an indication of the im portance and the timeliness of the papers that have been selected for publication and of the thoroughness of the engineer-scientists who are working in related fields. Responsible comment on research papers is therefore solicited for early publication along with authors' replies. Preference will be given to correspondence relating to papers that have appeared in the Quarterly, but comments on any research ideas of current interest will also be welcomed. In addition, short communications of interesting research ideas in preliminary form or of brief, original analyses of short subjects are also welcomed. These, too, can often be handled more quickly than longer papers, and, because of their encouragement of new ideas, can contribute greatly to the impact of the Quarterly on the growth of chemical engineering science. T h e aim of the Quarterly is not only to serve as a means of permanently record ing results of lasting value; it is also to provide means for active communication among research workers whose ideas may affect one another's work.
