DEBUT This first issue of the FUNDAMENTALS Quarterly of INDUSTRIAL AND ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY marks the start of a new journal, designed for the publication of fundamental papers in the broad field of chemical engineering research and industrial chemical technology. We hope that the new periodical will prove to be an attractive place to record some of the results and conclusions of the increasing effort in basic research by engineers and chemists, whether they work in university laboratories, in the chemical and process industries, or in other fields. T h e growing importance to the advancement of engineering science of work being done by these persons and the increasing urgency of assuring adequate communication among engineer-scientists have influenced the American Chemical Society in its decision to assist through the publication of this new journal. In selecting papers to be published, the editor will be guided by a few general principles. N o technical field to which important contributions in chemical engineering or technology are being made will be excluded, whether these contributions be experimental or theoretical, mathematical or descriptive, chemical or physical. Acceptable papers will ordinarily be characterized, however, by the presence of conclusions of some general significance, as distinguished from papers intended mainly to record data. Treatment of subjects will be based on the application of principles of chemical, physical, and mathematical sciences, and papers will be judged from the point of view of their probable lasting value. T h e editor welcomes the advice, comments, a n d criticism of his professional colleagues and of interested readers. H e hopes that the FUNDAMENTALS Quarterly can take a position of respect and influence beside other important publications which serve chemical engineer-scientists.
