GUIDE FOR AUTHORS T h e Journal of Chemical Documentation invites new (not previously p u b ­ lished) a n d original c o n t r i b u t i o n s which, it a c c e p t e d , a r e n o t t o b e published elsewhere. S u g g e s t i o n s by a u t h o r s with respect to referees for t h e i r m a n u ­ scripts will be a p p r e c i a t e d . M a n u s c r i p t s should b e s u b m i t t e d in triplicate a n d t y p e w r i t t e n doublespaced on s u b s t a n t i a ! p a p e r : good, clean copies m a d e b y a p e r m a n e n t dupli­ cation process are a c c e p t a b l e . C o n s u l t a recent issue of t h e J o u r n a l for general s t y l e . Titles should tell a c c u r a t e l y a n d clearly w h a t t h e p a p e r is a b o u t , in t e r m s of m a x i m u m specificity. Nomenclature should conform w i t h A m e r i c a n u s a g e as exemplified by C H E M I C A L A B S T R A C T S . Tables should be n u m b e r e d consecutively w i t h A r a b i c n u m e r a l s a n d should be included at t h e p r o p e r places in t h e m a n u s c r i p t . C o m p u t e r p r i n t o u t s m a y be e m p l o y e d only w h e n t h e y are of high c o n t r a s t a n d n o t too large for suitable pho'toreduction. Structural formulas should be used as economically as is consistent w i t h clarity. C o m p l e x f o r m u l a s should be p r e p a r e d as illustrations. Illustrations t h a t can be r e p r o d u c e d by m e a n s of line c u t s are pre­ ferred, a l t h o u g h halftone r e p r o d u c t i o n c a n be u n d e r t a k e n from highc o n t r a s t , glossy p h o t o g r a p h s (8 χ 1ϋ inches). Line d r a w i n g s m u s t be carefully p r e p a r e d ; freehand work is n o t suitable a n d will n o t be r e d r a w n b y t h e J o u r n a l . D r a w i n g s should b e d o n e w i t h I n d i a ink o n w h i t e d r a w i n g p a p e r , blue t r a c i n g cloth, or blue-lined c o o r d i n a t e p a p e r , t w o or t h r e e t i m e s t h e size desired in the cut. It m u s t be r e m e m b e r e d t h a t n u m b e r s a n d letters on t h e d r a w i n g or in t h e m a r g i n s will also b e r e d u c e d in size; t y p i n g is therefore u n s u i t a b l e . G r a p h s should b e p r e p a r e d so t h a t t h e " c u r v e s " a n d t h e m a r g i n s are heavier lines t h a n c o o r d i n a t e lines, which s h o u l d not be closer t o g e t h e r t h a n 10 m m . P o i n t s o n c u r v e s s h o u l d be t r u e circles, squares, or t r i a n g l e s large e n o u g h for t h e necessary r e d u c t i o n . F o r m u l a s a n d legends s h o u l d not be d r a w n on t h e g r a p h s . T h e n u m e r i c a l d e s i g n a t i o n (Arabic) of the figure a n d t h e legend should be t y p e d o n a s e p a r a t e sheet of p a p e r or p r i n t e d on t h e back of t h e d r a w i n g . I n t h e former case, w r i t e or print t h e figure n u m b e r o n t h e b a c k of t h e d r a w i n g . P h o t o g r a p h i c copies of d r a w i n g s are s u i t a b l e if t h e y a r c clear, highc o n t r a s t , preferably glossy p r i n t s . O r d i n a r y p h o t o c o p i e s a r e u n s a t i s f a c t o r y .

Literature citations s h o u l d be n u m b e r e d in t h e t e x t as s u p e r s c r i p t s ( w i t h o u t p a r e n t h e s e s ) . F o o t n o t e s citing w h e r e a n d w h e n t h e p a p e r w a s p r e s e n t e d s h o u l d be m a r k e d w i t h a n asterisk, a n d c h a n g e of a d d r e s s of a n a u t h o r w i t h a dagger. O t h e r footnotes should be assigned s u p e r s c r i p t n u m b e r s , as for l i t e r a t u r e c i t a t i o n s . C i t a t i o n s preferably should be placed a t t h e e n d of t h e p a p e r a n d preferably listed in a l p h a b e t i c a l o r d e r b y t h e first a u t h o r . Abbreviations of journals s h o u l d be t h o s e used b y C H E M I C A L A B S T R A C T S (see " L i s t of Periodicals A b s t r a c t e d b y Chemical Abstracts'').
