HANDLING

A GLANCE into what the future holds -*** for the rapidly expanding field of coal chemistry is had by a visit to the new Penn-Rillton F o u n d r y Products plant. Located on t h e Monongahela River at West Elizabeth, Pa., t h e small boxlike factory houses one of t h e most concentrated and completely automatic installations of materials handling and processing equipment ever packed into an area of comparable size. Recentiy placed in operation by Penn-Rillton, the plant processes lump coal and coal tar pitch into fine pulverized foundry mold facing a n d core binder materials. The nature of the raw materials and t h e products processed would normally make the problem of dust control loom large. Austin, designer of the plant and processing installation, solved-this problem b y installing an all-inclusive dust control and collection system. The equipment, however, is so designed that it occupies remarkably little floor space, a n d the plant provides room for considerable expansion of processing facilities. L u m p coal and dry coal tar p i t c h are the principal r a w materials received at the plant. Coming by rail from nearby mines, these materials are unloaded directly into a car hopper. T h e y then travel on a belt conveyor, to a single roll crusher, and then are carried b y bucket elevator to the top of t h e building. Passing through screw conveyors, the coal and pitch are delivered to their respective 100-ton storage silos. They then pass through any of a n u m b e r of combinations of pulverizers, screens, separators, and other equipment which reduce them to —200 mesh or finer before they arrive at bagging machines on the main floor. Bagged, products go to the warehouse area on the east side of the plant. The composition and grain sizes desired in the finished products determine the combinations of equipment through which the materials pass. Sometimes coal and pitch are combined in a number of proportions. Various other substances, including goulac, clay, and dextrine, are mixed with the pitch to produce core binders with special properties. The entire conveying a n d processing installation is completely enclosed and dusttight. A negative pressure is maintained in the system b y t h e dust collecting equipment; there is one collector for pitch dust and another for sea coal CHEMICAL

dust. These collectors may b e operated in combination or independently. T h e primary purpose of installing the elaborate dust-control system w a s to eliminate the hazard of spontaneous combustion. However, economic purposes a r e served as the collected dust is b a g g e d and sold, either separately or blended with other raw materials to obtain various end products.

Dust collecting system consists of large duct (left) which brings dust from several sources and delivers it to bagging machines. Another large duct leads down from dust collector hopper (upper right) to two smaller ducts. One at left takes dust to storage bin; one at right delivers it to bagging machines Electrical equipment in t h e manufacturing and warehouse areas is explosionproof. Interlocked controls prevent operators from starting or stopping process e q u i p m e n t in the w r o n g sequence. Automatic magnetic separators remove tramp iron from coal a n d / o r pitch, protecting process equipment from d a m a g e . Selection of t h e proper drives permits t h r e e identical 75-hp., 1800 r.p.m. explosionproof motors to power the pitch pulverizer and the t w o coal pulverizers. This makes only one spare motor necessary. W i t h a total of 7400 sq. ft. of manufacturing area, present equipment is concentrated in only 2400 sq. ft. of floor space. This includes a maze of pulverizing, conveying and blending equipment, and two 100-ton storage silos. T h e r e is still room for six more silos and AND

At The Atlantic Refining Company's plant in Philadelphia, alkyl aryl sulfonates are evaporated in Monel evaporators. Atlantic uses corrosionresisting Monel in condensers on benzene distillation equipment, piping, neutralization tank, settler, soap evaporators, solvent extraction equipment, steam coils in Ultrawet storage tanks and in tanks for storing 50% caustic soda.

How Monel protects against corrosion in

Synthetic Detergent Manufacture

jfàïK

It's no wonder that The Atlantic Refining Company, one of the largest detergent manufacturers in the country, relies heavily on corrosionresisting Monel to protect important process equipment items against corrosion and to insure the high purity of its synthetic detergent "Ultrawet." For there are plenty of places where corrosion can take hold in the manufacture of alkyl aryl sulfonate detergents. Among the corrosives which occur in the process are: sulfuric acid, sulfonic acids, dilute hydrochloric and hot caustic soda. In addition there is the problem of contamination: even slight traces of metallic corrosion products in a detergent may cause unwelcome odors and

instability. Service in many fields lias proved that Monel is often t~hc most economical material where a strong, tough alloy is need&d t o handle acids, alkalies and salts with a minimum of corrosion or ccantaminntion. Monel is an easily-farmed structural material whose corrosion resistance is not impaired by welding. If you would like to know whether Monel or one of t h e other Inco Nickel Alloys can help solve your corrosion problem, wirite t o Inco's Corrosion Engineering Section. Our Technical Bulletin T-5 "Engineering Properties of Monel and 4R" Monel" is yours for tlxe asking. The International Nickel Company, Inc. 67 Wall Street

the plant itself can be extended 135 ft. to the north and 170 ft. to the east. The flexibility of Penn-Rillton's mate rials handling system and the character of the equipment simplify maintenance and production operations to the point -where the bagging machines and han dling of finished product to and from storage are about the only operations requiring personnel.

• Power turntable that transfers car tons at 90° or 180° angles between two parallel or right-angle conveyor lines is offered by Rapids-Standard. Unit takes up 4 ft. of floor space and has a rotating carrier disk that floats packages around intersections where gravity or power conveyor curves can not operate. Steel turntable is 48 in. in diameter and 3 / 1 β in. thick, supported underneath by four rubber wheels. It is friction-driven by rubber-faced -wheel that contacts inner side of a steel reinforcing ring welded to the underside of the disk. Power is sup plied by a 1/2 hp· motor through a jackshaft to rotate the disk approxi mately 175 ft./min. H1 • Neoprene tire for wheel conveyor is offered by Rapids-Standard. Wheel conveyors equipped with these tires are said to handle safely fragile materials such as TV tubes, glass, or delicate pre cision instruments during manufacture, storage, or shipping. H 2 • Acid w a g o n offered by Automotive CHEMICAL

• Reciprocating conveyor for dry and moist materials is designed to feed a constant volume of any dry or moist material from an overhead bin. Offered by Hydro Blast, conveyor is operated by plant air, and the only electric power required is to operate a solenoid air valve. H 4ÎFork lift truck, added to Lamson Mobilift's line, has a capacity of 300O lb. at 24-in. load center. N e w 42-in. wheelbase truck, model M-324, features heavy-duty, oil immersed multiple disk clutch, constant mesh transmission, and fluid coupling. According to manufacturer, this drive transmits power smoothly from the engine to the drive wheels with maximum efficiency and minimum wear on the engine, clutch, and other components. There is no clutch pedal; just a push-pull forward-reverse lever, an accelerator and brake pedal. Truck has two forward and two reverse speeds. H 5 • Clark Equipment is equipping all of its gas-powered industrial trucks with bonded rather than riveted brake shoe and lining assemblies. Company claims process of cementing the brake lining on the brake shoe creates a more secure assembly and increases life of brake lining. Elimination of brake lining rivets adds to the braking effectiveness. The new assembly is fully interchangeable with current production H 6 models. • "Y" flipswitch is offered by Speedways Conveyor for use with their gravity wheel or roller conveyors. Flipswitch is completely portable. Made with steel ball bearing rollers, the flipswitch is two 45° curves in the form of a
