cals, oils, paints, sirups, and food products. The flow of material can be i emulated to suit the material and the operation, but company tests indicate that the machine is capable of higfci filling speed. A 52gallon drum is reportedly filled with SAE 30 oil at 95° F. in -49 seconds. Accuracy is claimed in the filling operation—442 pounds o f SAE 30 oil delivered to within 6 ounces—and safety is reported because no electrical equipment or attachments are required. H 1 Fluids and Solids Dumper A large capacity hydraulic materials handler for dumping liquids or solids into high level kettles or tanks has been developed by Lee Metal Products Co., Inc. It is claimed that one man can empty a 500pound-capacity barrel in less than one minute. Power requirements are met by water from the plant water main. Mounted on casters, the handler can be used to serve a battery of tanks or kettles.
For dumping or mixing dry or liquid products before elevating, the lifter can be fitted with a stainless steel trough and hopper. K 2 Bibliography on Pallets The Engineering Societies Library has made available a bibliography on pallets which lists 114 books and periodical articles published from 1937 to date. The list covers all aspects of the subject of pallets. Included are the design and construction of different types, handling of various materials on pallets, savings achieved in materials handling, and details of present-day applications in individual plants in a large number of industries. H S Truck w i t h H y d r a u l i c E l e v a t o r A materials handling machine has been developed which carries the driver and all topside machinery at one side of the platform. The open side of the truck carries a pair of hydraulic jacks which are ejected from the midsection at a 45° angle and act as stabilizers to hold the machine solid with loads up to 30,000 pounds.
The hydraulic elevator is ejected sideways and picks up loads with long steel forks as the tower is tilted inward to cradle the cargo safely. The tower then slides up and in, and the forks bring the load onto the carrying platforms. Retraction of jacks is the final operation. Attachments are available for handling spooled cable, steel pipe or culverts as long as 66 feet, and strip steel in large coils. Power is supplied by one rearmounted engine, either gasoline or Diesel. The machine is available from Lull Mfg. Co. in 10 models and three sizes. H 4 Check weighing Scale The Exact Weight Scale Co. has designed a scale especially for weighing filled bags. It will handle either the valve pack type, which usually comes down the conveyor and crosses the scale on its side, or the open mouth type, which crosses the scale in upright position before going on to the sewing machine. The scale follows the filling machine in its position on the conveyor line. After weighing, the over- or underweight bags are removed for trimming. Features of the scale include an illuminated dial and stainless steel pivot and bearings. H 5 280
