ABSTRACT: PvT properties, vapor pressures, and saturated densities for a new low-GWP refrigerant; R1224yd(Z) (cis-1-chloro-2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene; CF3CFCHCl), were measured. Forty-six PvT property data were obtained along four lower density isochores in the superheated region; 22, 48, 55, and 103 kg·m−3, and three higher density isochores in the compressed liquid region; 970, 1107, and 1197 kg·m−3 at pressures up to 6.4 MPa. Fifteen vapor pressure data were obtained in the temperature range from 310 to 410 K and at pressures up to 2393 kPa, and a vapor pressure correlation was formulated based on these vapor pressure measurements. Saturated vapor and liquid densities were directly measured by the visual observation of the vapor−liquid meniscus disappearance in the critical region, and also graphically determined by the intersections of the vapor pressure curve and the isochores of the PvT properties. In addition, the critical temperature Tc = 428.69 ± 0.02 K, the critical density ρc = 535 ± 5 kg·m−3, and the critical pressure Pc = 3331 ± 3 kPa for R1224yd(Z) were determined.

INTRODUCTION

EXPERIMENTAL SECTION Sample. The sample of R1224yd(Z) (CAS no. 111512-608) used in this study was supplied from AGC, Inc., Japan, and the purity of the sample is summarized in Table 1. The sample

In order to prevent the ozone depletion and global warming issues, there has been increasing interest in hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) as next-generation refrigerants. HFOs are expected to be R410A (R32/125 (50/50)) and R404A (R125/143a/134a (44/52/4)) alternatives for refrigerators and air conditioners. Moreover, HFOs are considered as candidates for new working fluids for high-temperature heat pumps and organic Rankine cycles using waste heat recovery and renewable energy. R1224yd(Z) (cis-1-chloro-2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene; CF3CFCHCl) has a normal boiling point temperature of 288 K, and the ODP and GWP are 0.00023 and less than 1,1 respectively. Fukushima et al.2 measured vapor pressures from 313 to 427 K, saturated liquid densities from 286 to 429 K, PvT properties from 359 to 473 K at pressures up to 9.5 MPa, and determined the critical parameters of R1224yd(Z). Higashi and Akasaka3 measured vapor pressures from 310 to 425 K, saturated densities from 409 to 429 K, and the critical parameters. Based on the experimental data, an equation of state (EOS) for R1224yd(Z) was formulated by Akasaka et al.4 using Helmholtz free energy. However, these results were only presented at international conferences, and thermophysical property numerical data are unavailable from peer-reviewed journals as of now. In addition, there are no experimental PvT property data in the liquid phase, and the formulation of a new EOS with lower uncertainties in the liquid phase is highly required. In this study, PvT properties, vapor pressures, saturated densities, and the critical parameters for R1224yd(Z) were measured, and a vapor pressure correlation of R1224yd(Z) was formulated. © XXXX American Chemical Society
