tone, died M a y 27 in Philadelphia after a long illness a t t h e a g e of 8 1 . A t t h e a g e of 20 h e went t o Cornell University t o establish a n d conduct a d e p a r t m e n t devoted t o photographic work a n d research. While there h e i n vented t h e halftone a n d brought a b o u t a revolution in t h e manner of illustration of periodicals a n d books. H e also devised t h e intaglio plates which were a forerunner of t h e rotogravure process a n d experimented in process color printing. H e invented t h e modern form of t h e binocular microscope, a n d in recent years h a d been engaged in perfecting details of his "polychrome" color process. T h e Franklin Institute presented M r . Ives with eight medals in recognition of his inventive genius, t h e American Academy of Arts a n d Sciences gave h i m t h e Rumford Medal in 1912 for his i n ventions in photoengraving a n d color photography, a n d he was also honored b y societies in London, Edinburgh, a n d Vienna. T h e Medal of Honor of t h e United Typot hetae of America was awarded to h i m in 1926. H e was a fellow of several scientific societies of t h e United S t a t e s and Europe.

W . H e a t h ) , " R o m a n c e of Chemistry," " I n organic Chemistry for Colleges." a n d " A Laboratory Course of General C h e m i s t r y . " He was also a contributor of articles t o scientific journals, a n d was known for his studies in new compounds of arsenic, chlorinated ethers, a n d t h e conductivity of electrolytes. F o r several years h e h a d conducted studies in t h e application of chemistry t o archaeology a n d had assisted archaeologists of t h e American School of Classical Studies a t Athens in identifying finds a t Athens a n d Corinth. His work centered principally o n analysis of t h e glaze on Greek vases, a n d t h e composition of old coins a n d similar small objects. Professor Foster was a member of t h e
