ASMS in Portland The 44th American Society for Mass Spectrometry Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics will be held May 12-16 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. The conference will feature daily plenary lectures, oral and poster sessions, workshops, and short courses on all aspects of MS. Registration will be held Sunday from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Oregon Convention Center. Rates are $140 for members, $75 for student members, $230 for nonmembers, and $120 for student nonmembers. There will be 21 workshops offered during the meeting and five short courses prior to the meeting. The ASMS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Mass Spectrometry will be presented to Burnaby Munson of the University of Delaware and Frank Field of Rockefeller University on Thursday, May 16. In the course of their research on ionmolecule reaction kinetics, Munson and Field recognized that the characteristic product ions formed in ion-molecule reactions of methane and trace levels of additives could be used to identify the additive molecules based on only a few peaks. The resulting technique chemical ionization MS was the first of the soft ionization techniques and is still widely used to solve analytical problems For further information on registration orhousine* contact ASMS 1201 Don Diego Ave Santa 87505 (505-9894517; fax 505-989-1073) 316 A
