HIS symposium will l>e held in New York, Ν . Y., at the Hotel Pennsyl­ vania, November 2 to 4 , 1939, by the American Institute of Physics, 175 Fifth Ave., New York, Ν. Υ., with the coopera­ tion of the National Bureau of Standards, the National Research Council, and of­ ficers and committees of many technical societies. The program is in charge of representa­ tive committees of authorities in various fields, who have arranged for a program of 100 or more papers om scientific and technical subjects, which will be presented in concurrent sessions of selected groups. All interested persons active in science or engineering are cordially invited to con­ tribute papers and t o attend the sessions. Manuscripts may be submitted until December 3 1 , but abstraits must be re­ ceived by September 1 5 , for inclusion in t h e printed program» which will be mailed in advance on request to the insti­ tute. There will be a registration fee of S 1.00. Arrangements will be made for late contributors to present their papers on supplementary programs a s far as time permits. The chairmen of the committees are Gustav Egloff, A. W. Eweil, C. O. Fairchad, J. D . Hardy, H. F . Mullikin, F. H. Norton, R. B. Sosman. C B. Veal. H. T . Wensel, and G. B. Wilkes. H. A. Bar­ ton, director of the institute, is chairman of the main committee.

S A F E Practice Conference under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Depart­ ment of Labor and Industry and Penn­ sylvania State College will be held at the Nittany Lion Inn, State College, Penna., on September 20. There will be two sessions at which papers on various subjects peitaining t o safety practices will be presented. A m o v ­ ing picture on "Lead Arsenate Spray for Orchards'' will also be included. Lunch­ eon will be served at Nittany Lion Inn.

AUL DWIOHT ΙΘΗΛΜ, research chemist of the National Cannera Association, died August 28 in Portland, Maine. Dr. Isnam was bora in Hampden, Mass.. September 10, 1906, and was graduated from the Massachusetts State College with the Ph.D. degree in 1035. He served as instructor at the college for a year after graduation, was later in the food research division of the United States Department of Agriculture, stationed a t Pullman, Wash., and a t t h e time of his death was conducting chemical research on the nu­ tritional -values of sardines for the National Canners Association, Washington, D. C.

LENN- HUNTINGTON PICKABD, aged 60, widely known paint, oil, and varnish technician and consultant, died a t Wilmette, IU., and wa3 buried on July 24. Mr. Piekard had been suffering from a heart affliction for some time, but had been able to be about his work until about a week before the fatal attack. He was born a t Wilson, Ν. Υ., July 29, 1870. H e was graduated from the Cen­ tral High School at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1898 and studied art a t Adelbert College the following two years. He then entered Columbia University, New York, Ν. Υ., and was graduated in 1904 with a B.S. in chemistry. His first position was with the Glidden Varnish Co., Cleveland, where he remained until 1905 when he became associated with Charles B. Jacobs, of New York, as a chemist. A short time later he joined the Columbia University staff, where he re­ mained until 1906, when he became chem­ ist and superintendent of refineries for Spencer Kellogg à Sons, Inc., Buffalo. After five years, he went to George D. Wetherill à Co., Philadelphia, as chemist and superintendent. In 1012 he was made manager of the South Chicago plant and special oils department of the American Linseed Co., which connection he severed in 1016 t o establish his own business as consulting chemist and chemical engineer. Mr. Piekard was a member of the AMBBICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY, the Chemists9 Club of New York, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the American Society for Testing Materials. He also took an active interest in the welfare of t h e Federation of Paint and Varnish Production Clubs.
