Dry detection of SO2:

Out of step, or a step ahead?

Since dry detection uses no wet c h e m icals it's out of step with other systems. But precisely for this reason, it's a giant step ahead of the c r o w d . Meloy Laboratories' dry detection sulfur analyzers use a detector w h i c h w o r k s on the p h o t o m e t r i c detection of the flame emission of sulfur c o n t a i n ing c o m p o u n d s in a hydrogen-air flame. We use this m e t h o d not because it's different, but because it's better. Over 1000 flame p h o t o m e t r i c sys tems have been put into service since 1965 for detection and analysis of sul fur and p h o s p h o r u s c o m p o u n d s and hydrocarbons c o m m o n l y f o u n d in air p o l l u t i o n , pesticides, and petro chemicals. PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

Consider these advantages of dry d e t e c t i o n : c 3 c c c c

greater detection sensitivity greater detection specificity responds in seconds no leaky valves, c o r r o s i o n , chemicals lower cost to operate m i n i m u m maintenance c o n t i n u o u s measurement provides greater repeatability

Atmospheric pollutants are burned in a hydrogen-rich flame (Flame P h o t o metric Detector). Phosphorus or sul fur c o m p o u n d s burned in this flame give characteristic emissions. Specific detection is achieved by unique geo metric arrangement of the burner w h i c h shields the primary flame from the p h o t o m u l t i p l i e r and filters. An ion target included in the burner permits simultaneous operation of the unit as a flame ionization detector for detection of total hydrocarbons w i t h the FPD channel giving simultaneous S or Ρ readout.
