Perform all tests in a fume hood. Transfer 200 g to a tared, preconditioned boat of 25–30 mL capacity. Place the boat in the approximate center of a glass combustion tube, about 350 mm long and 35 mm in diameter, and mount in a horizontal position. Fit the tube at one end with a removable closure. Bend the exit end downward at 90° to the horizontal, and draw it out so as to fit it into a one-hole rubber stopper held in the mouth of a suction flask. Cool the suction flask in an ice bath. Place the boat and sample in the tube, close the entrance end, and reduce the pressure to less than 15 mm of mercury. Heat gently until all the mercury has distilled from a quiet surface (without ebullition). Remove the boat, heat it in a muffle furnace at 800 °C for 15 min, and cool.
